Friday Evening Seminar on the Rebetiko music of Greece, to be held

Our
monthly seminars are held on the last Friday of every month. They are open to
all interested parties. Just come along.
The
February seminar will be a particularly special session. We are continuing our
work on the QANUN and SANTOURI (plucked and hammered dulcimers), which will
develop further at the Rebetiko Summer School at SOAS on 23-25 June, and also
at the Hydra Rebetiko Conference on 13-16 October.
SANTOURI, QANUN AND KANONAKI
ED EMERY will give a brief audiovisual introduction to the instruments, their history and their development.
London-based instrument-maker TAD RYTWINSKI will introduce his own instruments, and will talk about the development of the qanun and santouri in the Mediterranean area.
Master santouri player PEJMAN AZARMINA will give a talk and a mini-concert on the Persian tradition of santouri.
Turkish qanun player MEHMET CAN of the Nihavend group will talk about the traditions of qanun playing, and will offer musical material from the Turkish repertoire.
The Friday 25 March seminar will focus on the Greek traditions of santouri and kanonaki.
Admission to these seminars is free,
but a financial contribution would
be welcomed.

The dates for the 2005 REBETIKO SUMMER SCHOOL at SOAS are 23-25 June. The
Summer School will feature a free one-day conference “HOMAGE TO MARKOS VAMVAKARIS”, attended by STELIOS VAMVAKARIS. Details from [email protected]
This year’s HYDRA REBETIKO CONFERENCE [Island of Hydra, near Athens, 13-16 October 2005] will be
on the topic of “Rebetiko and Politics, and the Politics of Rebetiko”. Papers are invited.
The conference is open to all interested parties.
