Hewlett-Packard (Compaq) Corporation
Austin, Texas (Oct 97 - Jun 01)

Systems / Software Engineer III
(
Network Engineer / Systems Engineer / Test Engineer)

Synopsis:
As the Test Group Senior Network Engineer, I developed (installed, integrated, configured, operated, upgraded, troubleshot, and repaired) a “customer” based network infrastructure with multiple network topologies and multiple bridge / router configurations to provide my test engineers an environment 100% duplicating a real-world client environment.  The environment was a mixture of Hewlett-Packard (Compaq) and third party switches, concentrators, hubs, bridge / routers, and any other technologies I could gather to my lab to best simulate a real-world "customer" environment.

Couple this with the establishment (installation, integration, operations, upgrades, troubleshooting, and repair) of a client - server infrastructure consisting of approximately 1,950 servers, workstations, desktops, home computers, and notebook / portable systems to test new, production, and legacy network and computer technologies with, through, and on.

Finally, as the Test Group's most experienced "customer-based" engineer / administrator / technician, I developed test strategies & documentation, based on those "real world" environments, to introduce new server and network technologies into for the most arduous series of testing ever conducted.

Into this environment, we introduced Hewlett-Packard's (Compaq's) latest alpha (pilot), beta (prototype), release candidate, and release network infrastructure and server technologies Hewlett-Packard (Compaq) was preparing for worldwide markets.

Hewlett-Packard (Compaq), as a result of this test strategy and environment, discovered and debugged more hardware, firmware, and software "bugs" in third party AND Hewlett-Packard (Compaq) technologies than had ever been done prior to my labs being established.

More often than not, OEM vendors (Intel, SMC, 3Com, Alteon, DEC, IBM, Madge, and others) sent their products to our test center for "evaluation" purposes knowing we would uncover bugs in their technologies their own labs hadn't uncovered...and we rejected a lot of these "evaluation" products for the "Compaq" label because of the serious bugs we found in these systems, components, and software.

This combined "customer based" network / client-server / test environment resulted in Hewlett-Packard (Compaq) winning numerous industry awards and acclamations from several notable industry independent testing centers and trade magazines.

The most significant of these awards that was DIRECTLY attributed to my engineering & test strategies was the 1999 NIC “Shootout”, hosted in Hawaii by PC Magazine, where Hewlett-Packard's (Compaq’s) Intel-based NICs were proven far superior to the exact same Intel NICs Intel Corporation submitted into competition against us.  We placed ahead of Intel (who came in second place during this and many other competitions) in the ratings and well ahead of 3Com, IBM, and other NIC manufacturers.

In other competitions using my same test strategies and lab configurations, Hewlett-Packard's (Compaq's) ProLiant servers won out over and far outdistanced all other servers produced by ALL other server manufacturers between 1998 and 2001.

My test engineering strategy and lab engineering configurations were later, and still are today, being adopted Hewlett-Packard- (Compaq-) wide, saving Hewlett-Packard (Compaq) millions of dollars in redundant testing and staff as well as producing far superior network infrastructure and ProLiant server technologies.

As a result of this corporate-wide adoption and my Customer-based LAN / WAN infrastructure implementations & test strategies, I was awarded 1,200 stock options of Hewlett-Packard (Compaq) stock as a Superior Achievement Award.

Major Tasks:
·
Installation, integration, configuration, operations, upgrades, troubleshooting, and repairs to network
infrastructure components, including (but not limited to) the following:

Entergy Corporation
New Orleans, Louisiana (Jan 96 - Oct 97)

Systems Engineer II
(Systems Engineer / Network Engineer)

Synopsis:
At Entergy, I was the Senior Systems Engineer in the Non-UNIX Operations Center charged with the installation, integration, engineering, operations, administration, upgrading / enhancements, troubleshooting, and repair of the corporations microprocessor server technologies.  In a very short period of time, I collapsed several hundreds of obsolete servers and applications into a centralized operations center and consolidated a large number of Microsoft SQL Server databases into this system.

Next, we developed a backup / restore strategy that minimized and later nearly eliminated lost data due to remote site problems.  We scripted backup / restore operations, then fine-tuned them to such an extent that most of these operations were conducted in a completely automated fashion and without interruption to the user community.

We introduced anti-virus initiatives into all servers to stop the prior-to-that-time constant virus attacks that frequently interrupted work efforts and management data collection / gathering initiatives.

Finally, we centralized and linked user access to required databases through a series of profiles that, when implemented, meant one login allowed users instant access to all of their authorized data structures.

After we completed the centralization of all applicable databases, we discovered that so much broadband (interstate and international) bandwidth was made available that Entergy’s non-regulated corporation leased the available bandwidth to MCI for their “overflow” telecommunications traffic needs, providing Entergy Corporation with a significant and until then unrealized profit source.

Since there was still a significant budget available after our well planned centralization efforts were successfully completed, I formed two distinct Beta Test Centers within the Non-UNIX Operations Center

  • the first to test Pilot / Prototype Server Technologies and Beta Network Operating Systems / Operating Systems for strategic corporate functionality & roll-out planning; and,

  • the second to test corporate-developed and Commercial Off-The-Shelf Software for possible strategic functionality & mission-critical applications roll-out planning.

  • 20 Beta Servers (Compaq, Dell, others)

  • 50 Clients (used for various engineering & administrative tasks)

  • Rack-mount systems (freeing up valuable real estate space in the Operations Center for other uses)

  • Management & Monitoring Console Systems (for remote management, traffic monitoring, troubleshooting, and statistical usage data collection purposes)

·         Established multiple applications servers to consolidate & centralize enterprise-level applications, including (but not limited to) the following:

  • Microsoft Exchange Server

  • Microsoft Internet Information Server

Tulane University of Louisiana
New Orleans, Louisiana (Jan 90 - May 92)

Faculty Assistant
(Teacher's Assistant / Systems Engineer / Network Engineer)

Synopsis:
At Tulane, my duties provided me with vast teaching, communications, interpersonal relationship, and management opportunities in the educational sector.  My tasks included everything from teaching undergraduate seminars, lab management, student worker staff management, systems engineering and administration (Novell / NT Servers, Windows clients) and tutoring.

This was accomplished in conjunction with Tulane Computing Services (TCS), and I helped establish two new student labs (one for the Computer Information Systems (CIS) program; a second in the Computer Engineering program) while assisting in the upgrading and enhancements to campus-wide TCS labs and technologies, including (but not limited to) the following:

  • 2 Convex Supercomputers

  • A number of IBM Mainframes

  • 3 IBM AS-400 / 2 RS-6000 RISC UNIX Clusters

  • 500+ Lab Workstations

  • Notebook Access Counters

Finally, I served as a representative on the TCS Network Infrastructure planning committee that re-wired the entire Tulane University campus, allowing students in all of the dorms to plug in and utilize their personally-owned computers for accomplishing their homework.  This was done in conjunction with our establishing a campus-wide anti-virus program that hadn't existed prior to that date.

I proved myself to be so successful at Tulane as both a Systems Engineer and Faculty Assistant that the Tulane University Basketball Program Head Coach commented to the Tulane University President & my Dean the following information:

“Professors teach classes of students without regard to these students actually learning the material covered.  Mr. White teaches each student per class, and our athletes are learning far more from his computer science courses than they are from our Nobel Prize winning Professors’ courses.  He’s the most popular Instructor on campus today…for both athletes and non-athlete students at Tulane.” [1]

I was also instrumental in bringing into Tulane’s classroom “real world” experiences to relate to students and faculty alike, bringing a deeper understanding of how computer technologies & network infrastructures impact the business world students would soon enter.

Major Tasks:
·
Procurement, installation, integration, enhancement, management, operations, administration,
troubleshooting, and repairs to Tulane University’s computer and network infrastructures

·         Providing enhancements and updates to all of the servers, workstations, desktops, and portables / notebooks in multiple Tulane departments

·         Serving as a field service engineer to aide faculty, staff, and students with computer and network connectivity issues as they arose

·         Planning & implementation of campus-wide anti-virus infrastructure strategies that significantly reduced virus, worm, Trojan horse infestations and lost computer resources

·         Actively taught undergraduate seminars and labs in multiple computer disciplines (i.e.: programming, networking, client-server environments, and MIS Management)

·         Counsel students on their academic curriculum as it related to the public, educational, and private sectors of the computer industry as well as how to best optimize their opportunities upon and after graduation
