Ophisaurus attenuatus

Common Name
western slender glass lizard

Iowa Range
south-central Iowa

Habitat
dry grassland and dry open woodland

Description
While this lizard may appear to be a snake due to its limbless body, the presence of a lateral fold, eyelids, and external ear openings reveal that it is indeed a lizard. White markings can be found in the center of the back scales and a prominent dark stripe runs down the middle of the back. Narrow dark stripes can also be found below the lateral groove.
