Welcome To Jungle John's Environmental Issues

I have chosen to put this page on my website because I have always held a deep-rooted respect for our world's trees, forests, wildlife, and nature in general. This page of my site is dedicated to these things, and the importance of their conservation. I hope you find it important, informative, and useful.

DEFORESTATION IN THE U.S.

In my extensive travels throughout the Southeastern United States, I have noticed a very disturbing trend in our country's changing landscape. Not only is civilization forever spreading and sprawling into the countryside, but our LOGGING INDUSTRY is deceiving us. It seems to be common practice for this industry to completely clear millions of acres of natural southern woods each year. These woods are native habitats to many kinds of trees, including Live Oak, Water Oak, White Oak, Maple, Hickory, Cedar, Cypress, Palm, Camphor, Dogwood, etc.

The logging industry calls this natural resource recyclable, in that they replant new trees after clearing. HAS ANYONE ELSE NOTICED that the only trees that ever get replanted are the fast-growing, low-oxygen-producing, highly acidic, and unshady southern pines??? The hardwoods take sometimes hundreds of years to grow to maturity, but because they are not profitable for the logging industry, never seem to get replanted. In my opinion, this practice can be nearly as harmful to the environment as clearing without any reforestation. Without the oxygen and dark shady areas provided by our huge and mature hardwoods, the temperature and light-levels will naturally increase in these areas..... affecting the undergrowth and wildlife patterns as well.

I would like to hear from others who have witnessed this practice, and are concerned as I am about the unending murder of our forests.

LITTERING

Another disturbing sight in our landscape is the unforgivable amount of litter still being dumped and spread on our roadways, waterways, sidewalks, and trails. The government spends millions of dollars picking up litter and campaigning against it, but we humans just dont get the message. We continue to moan and groan about taxes, and openly and blatantly continue to throw trash out of moving vehicles, in parking lots, etc. We should all start taking a stronger stand on this issue. When you see someone littering, ask them to please not pollute your environment. Ask if they throw trash on the floor of their houses, (some of whom do, I'm sure of it). Say "Excuse me, but you've dropped something", and then pick it up and hand it to them. There are anti-confrontational ways to get the point across to those who just don't, or won't get it. Pick up litter when you can, and when you see your world being trashed by PIGS, let them know you don't appreciate it.
