On 4/22/98, I read a very sad news in
the Baltimore Sun newspaper. It reports the death
of one of my favorite poets, Octavio Paz.
I've always wanted to meet Paz in person, hoping that
maybe in my second trip to Mexico
I could go to meet him.
But that's not possible now.... Baltimore Sun, Wednesday, April 22, 1998 ASHES OF OCTAVIO PAZ HAVE LONG WAIT FOR BURIAL HONORS Mexico's government wants to keep the ashes of poet Octavio Paz in a crypt at a Mexico City cemetery alongside other illustrious Mexicans, but paperwork might delay the honor by a year. Paz was an atheist, and his remains were cremated at a private ceremony late Monday and taken home by widow Maria Jose. The cremation followed a very public memorial service at Mexico City's Palace of Fine Arts, broadcast live on national television and attended by President Ernesto Zedillo, most of his Cabinet and writers, artists and business leaders. Paz, who won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1990, died Sunday night at age 84 after a long illness.
