When I was a student of the FAMU ART DEPARTMENT, I studied the works of SALVADOR DALI, born May 11, 1904-died in 1989 and RENE MAGRITTE, born November 21, 1898-died August 15, 1967. Two artists who portray SURREALISM in a most delightful way, never giving a thought to what the art critics had to say!
SOLILOQUY TO A CARD PARTY comes from my college days in the '70s! I was a student at FSU, had recently become a KAPPA KITTEN, and formerly resided in KELLUM HALL (which was known back then as "The Zoo" -- comprised mostly of Freshmen and Sophomores). Those were fun times when after class, we played several games of Bid Whist until we were tired!
One evening, there was a party going on in the "Miami boys'" room and I had been given an exclusive invitation (not just ANYBODY could go to 'Tee' and 'Cabbit's' room). I had never been and had heard all of the HOOPLA about it, so I went. There were about 4 or 5 people there when I walked in. Everyone was listening to music, chilling and just having a nice time. I joined them.
Time passed, but I don't know how much. I remember telling everyone goodbye and walking out into the hallway...from that point, the SOLILOQUY began. The hallway seemed dark and narrow, and the elevator seemed far away. Once I was on that very crowded elevator, I was TOO PARANOID to get off! Once I built up the courage, I ran back to the dorm parlor to find my sister Deborah. She was with a guest and was probably embarrased by the way I was acting, so she offered me a cookie. When I didn't take it, she knew that something was wrong.
I was unable to play cards, sit down and visit, or just about anything that involved an attention span. A nice lady of SIGMA GAMMA RHO took me outside to get some air! The moon was BEAUTIFUL and the air smelled so CLEAN, like ammonia. We stood on the steps and talked for what seemed like hours. She talked me "down" enough so that my sister and her friend could walk me home. I often reflect on that night and remember the sky was so clear and beautiful.
