1999 visit to Mt. Ruapehu

On saturday the 13th of February Brian Casey, Peter Sebborn, Andy Falshaw and I paid a visit to the Turoa side of Mt. Ruapehu. We were mainly looking to find Utricularia novae-zelandiae in flower. The same time in 1998 Brian and I had found plenty up near the Massey University Alpine Club hut but this time things were much drier and we were unable to locate any in that area. We did find plenty of Drosera spathulata and D. arcturi though.

Further down the mountain we detoured onto a track and followed it to the 'boardwalk'. Along the way we found this 'sphagnum-fall' near which we saw more D. spathulata and D. arcturi.

Once we got to the boardwalk area we spotted some of the elusive Utric. flowers and the plant itself turned out to be relatively common. More D. arcturi was also found in the vicinity.
