Slide 22

A genetic resource collection is a repository of samples of living material of animals, plants, fungi or microorganisms generally in a dormant or other phase in which they are not actively growing.

Botanical Gardens are National collection sites. They serve as important centers for research and preservation of plant species. The Kew Garden in London England, the MacMillan Bloedel conservatory in Vancouver, and the Butchart gardens in Victoria are good examples. Canada has 102 botanical gardens , USA has 643, Australis has 68, Japan has 176, and, Ethiopia has 3.

World wide, there are over 150 major crop gene banks . These banks are held by international, national and regional institutions, both public and private. International Agricultural Research Center (IARC) holds the largest ex situ collection in the world with some 510,000 accessions. Regional gene banks include the Nordic Gene Bank, in South Africa, Gene Bank, and the Genetic resource center in Ethiopia.
