I was recently given the priviledge to play Grim Fandango which in my opinion is one of the best games ever made! This will also be displayed in a future "about me!" chapter. I will discuss more about the game there, but emphasis on the art here.
Reference Shot
For those that are unfamiliar with this game, the hero is Manny Calavera, as portrayed above. This shows him riding an elevator in his work uniform, as a Grim Reaper. I used this picture as my primary reference shot, which of course is a screenshot downloaded from the web.
Rough Sketch
This too was done in all #2 pencil. Nothing was done here other than brainstorming a pose for Manny. The reference shot is far from dramatic, so this is what my mind came up with.
Clean-Up Drawing
This was also done in pencils. To make this drawing more faithful to the video game, I gave it more of a "boxy" image. For dramatics, one usually uses hair and folds in the clothing. Since I had neither at my disposal, I had the hood cover a part of Manny's face and left the other side wide open. Additionally, the idea to have his mouth open came here. It gave the picture a lot more feeling. I also extended the length of the sleeves. I encountered massive amounts of difficulty with the left hand. To make my life easier, and curled his fingers, but later decided that it looked too unnatural.
Final Drawing
This was done in all pencils (#1, #2, #2.5, colored), crayons, and a little bit of ink. One of the greatest challenges in this work was the coloring. To color his cloak without making the background-less work look dull. A slight use of lights and smudging of crayons was key. The most obvious change is the left arm, in which I decided to raise for dramatics and also fits in the "about me" use. The ugliest part is of course the smudges (mostly from the crayons).
Final Copy
This was the most time consuming phase of the drawing. The cleanup, which was all done on the computer. I cleaned up Manny to make his bones look as white as possible. I gave the paler parts of the scythe (staff portion) a slight grayish hue, eventhough it is supposed to be white, I didn't want to take away the white look from Manny. Additionally, I wanted to make the scythe blade shine without taking away its pencil looking appearance.
