Chapter 44, June 5, 2001

Anyone that knows me would know that I am a gamer. If you didn't know me, well, you now you know. To be even more precise, my favorite types of games are puzzle and RPGs (Role-Playing Games). I've never really been into Action and fighting games, mostly because I was terrible at them. However, that has all changed.

With the help of my brother, I have recently beaten the original Metroid on the 8-bit NES. I loved the game so much, that immediately afterwards, I acquired Super Metroid (Metroid 3) on the Super Nintendo (SNES). When I finally managed to beat that game, I was overwhelmed by the greatness of this game. The biggest surprise was not the action that was involved (since that was expected), but that it had a very good plotline! Even better were the hidden items, and the challenge to find them all (something like a puzzle).

After completing these two games, I visited many Metroid related websites. I found out about Metroid II: The Return of Samus on the GameBoy. I have actually given it a try, but for some reason, I have a hard time playing in Grayscale. It's just hard to get into a game like that after playing the SNES version.

In any case, one other thing that intrigued me the most about the game is Samus herself, the playable character. Where at the time a female character of that stature was unthinkable! Even all the game manuals referred to Samus as a "he." This was, of course, supposed to be the biggest surprise of the game (even though I knew this before starting). Moreover, she's not a princess or the like trying to protect the world, but rather a bounty hunter who is doing this because it is her job! Even better, she is not scantily clad, although if you wanted to see "more of her," you would have to earn it. Strangely enough, I'm not that upset about it. In fact, it has almost become a "Metroid Tradition."

Though I own many Nintendo games, I do regret not having experienced Metroid earlier. Not only is it a great series, it has also greatly improved my skills in action games. Right now, I am highly anticipating Metroid IV and Metroid Prime coming on the Gameboy Advance and NINTENDO GAMECUBE respectively. I have already pre-ordered the Gameboy Advance and will be anxiously waiting for Metroid IV to come out for it. As for the NINTENDO GAMECUBE, Super Smash Brothers Melee and other games will contain my excitement until Metroid Prime.

One last statement I have about Metroid is that perhaps I was lucky not to have experienced Metroid until now. For one thing, I do not have wait seven years for the next game (unlike the Metroid Veterans.) Regardless, NINTENDO will be sucking up even more of my money than anticipated, but it should all be worth it!
