Chapter 12, April 4th, 1999

After another exhilarating day COMBINED with an awesome weekend (well, just the Saturday, today has just begun!), I came back tired. After a shower, and not feeling like doing anything else, I turned on the television. I last left the tuner on The Cartoon Network, and there was the "Cartoon Theater," playing An American Tale. I might have missed the first 10 minutes or so, but this would've been the third time I have ever seen it, although I haven't seen it in quite a while.

Of couse some regression is sure to occur, but since you probably at least heard of this movie, I won't go on. The point I want to get to is one of my favorite aspects of the computer.... SOUNDS.... more specifically, MIDIs.

Without going into the technical aspects, WHY DO MIDIs RULE? Because they simply do, you can keep your MP3s, MIDIs RULE!!!! Before you bash on me on how MIDIs don't sound like much, all I have to say is go out and get a new sound card, such as my AWE64. Here's a headstart, go to Creative Labs and go buy one now. Or the new Soundblaster LIVE! which I have intentions on getting myself soon.

MIDIs are considerably much smaller than WAVs and any MPEG layers. Which not only saves on disk space, but also transfer time! Ever been to a web page that plays music? How about one that decides to play a 4-minute MP3 file? For those of you that use Netscape, which won't show the page until it loads up EVERYTHING, boy, I sure feel sorry for you. (Side topic, who else out there is disgusted about the AOL takeover of Netscape?)

Now, what about there not being voices in MIDIs? Personally, I've always liked the instrumental versions of most songs. And when it comes to singing along with it, I don't want to sing ALONG with someone, just on my own. Besides, I usually study with music, and songs with lyrics usually become too distracting.

One last thing... most MP3's are ILLEGAL. If you don't own the CD/cassette/video/whatever, IT IS ILLEGAL after 24 hours (assuming it is copyrighted material, which it seems that over 99% on the web are)! I'm sure the same goes for WAVs, although I'm not sure about MIDIs. Even if they were illegal over MIDIs, no one has made a big thing about it, and I for one have never seen a "disclaimer" or "warning" regarding MIDIs.

Okay, so what does An American Tale have anything to do with this? I'll tell you, after the movie, I decided I would try to make my own MIDI. I downloaded a few programs, and after trying out a few, I settled with one. It is a demo version, so I can't do much with it. But I have to say that after last night, I have much more respect for MIDIs.

I made my own MIDI of the song Somewhere Out there. It's very simple, only one instrument (piano), but it's nothing great. I'd trash it if it didn't take me over 2 hours to make it! If ANYONE has a program which can convert MIDIs into sheet music (and/or vice versa) PLEASE, e-mail me! Either with the attachment or a URL, either one will be okay. I have also downloaded 2 other versions of the song, so feel free to download these if you want to, they are much better than mine. Somewhere Out there 2 and Somewhere Out there 3.

TWO HOURS!!!! TWO HOURS to make a simple MIDI that's not even 2 minutes long! It takes me less than 10 minutes to make an MP3 that's more than twice the time length. Of course, if I had a keyboard hooked onto the computer, that might be a different story, but I don't. As for WAVs? Feh, those are even easier to make than MP3s.

Before I forget, Have a HAPPY EASTER! I'll be attending an Easter Dinner with a Baptist family later today, should be fun.

One last thing, if anyone forgot, CHANGE YOUR CLOCKS, one hour faster. "Fall Back, Spring Ahead." Just in case anyone is wondering, it was during the Roosevelt administration (90% sure of the administartion) that it was decided that Daylight Savings Time will begin on the first Sunday of April. Yeah, the Queen of Useless Facts comes through again... And you know the saying "Change your clock, change your battery." Remember to also check your fire alarms, and give it a nice fresh battery, because "only you can prevent forest fires." (okay, so that was corny).
