IS THE LAW SUFFICIENT?

California law provides for the prohibition of finning of sharks and for protection of certain species of shark whose numbers are known to be depleted. The populations of many sharks, such as the Blue Shark Prionace glauca, are unknown and therefore legislation does not provide for their protection. Quotas on all shark species need to be enforced until their numbers can be determined.

IS THE LAW WORKING?

This is a complex question to answer due to the fact that it is extremely difficult to determine just how many sharks there are in any given area. Many species of shark do not have a home range and travel great distances. In addition, most sharks are very elusive and are only seen when they are baited.

DIFFICULTIES IN ENFORCEMENT

It is near impossible to police an entire stretch of coastline, especially a coastline as large as that of California's.
