FREE LOLITA UPDATES

Dear Friends of Lolita, The campaign to bring Lolita home marches on, literally. The University of Miami organization Humans Helping Animals is continuing the once-a-month demonstrations at the Seaquarium. The next one will be on Sunday, December 5, at 12 Noon. Anyone who can be in the Miami area at that time is encouraged to participate. New leaflets are now being readied for distribution at the demo and elsewhere. Just email to [email protected] for more information. The demonstrations let the Seaquarium management and staff, as well as the media and the public, know that the campaign for Lolita goes on. The demonstrations raise issues that have still not been talked about much in Miami, like Lolita's continued use of the calls that only her family in the wild use, and about the lifetime bonds within her extended family, about her longevity and her ability to bring new healthy young orcas into her family. When all the evidence is considered anyone with a heart must conclude that Lolita needs the chance to return to home and family. At the same time we are working with the Animal League Defense Fund to prepare a legal argument that the tank is illegally small. The powerful one-hour documentary "Lolita - Spirit in the Water" is once again playing in cities across the country. We've received calls and emails of support for the campaign from Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Albuquerque and Idaho in recent weeks. Meanwhile, Lolita's family paid an extended visit to Puget Sound. For an entire week orcas from all three pods were seen dining on chum salmon just north of Seattle. J16, a 27-year-old mother of two young males, was seen with her new calf born in just the past month. And L98, the new calf first seen in September, was also seen and is doing well. In just the past 3 days they've been back in Puget Sound. Anyone doing their holiday shopping by the internet can find Free Lolita T-shirts, casette tapes, bumper stickers and chocolate bars at http://www.freelolita.net with proceeds going toward the campaign effort. Thanks for all your help and support. Howard ------------------------------- Howard Garrett Tokitae Foundation 2403 So. Northbluff Rd. Hello All; I'd like to share this letter with all of you, it was written by the young lady who took all the pictures of MarineLand Niagara Falls for my website. For The Whales and Mother Earth Anita Orcinus Free the Whales and Dolphins Support Marine Freedom http://www.ndrsnet.com/marinefreedom ----Original Message Follows---- An article appeared in my local newspaper yesterday and here's my (completely non-biased) interpretation of it: Title: Holer has Nothing to Hide Marineland has been under attack by animal activists since early this week after John Holer imported three male beluga whales from the Russian Academy. Holer says he has nothing to hide because he did nothing wrong. (right, 'cause he's never done anything wrong...) Toronto based Zoocheck Canada said Holer secretly brought the whales from Russia with no government notification to escape public ridicule, but Holer says these accusations are unfounded. According to him the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species was notified in advance of the import. And so, three four-metre male belugas travelled 18 hrs by cargo plane to Toronto on Sunday. They are in good heath, so says Holer, and are being kept in Holding tanks while they adjust to their new surroundings. And in about two weeks they could be on display in the PARK'S (not zoo's) new exibit, Friendship Cove (sounds nice and cuddly, eh?) Yes, i'll admit that Friendship Cove is the largest artificial whale habitat in the world, and it set Holer back a pretty penny, but really, this is Marineland. How well do you suppose they treat their whales, or other animals for that matter? Oh! and do you want some more great news from Marineland? Of course you do! They have also applied to capture six beluga whales, four female and two males from Churchill, Manitoba. "We want to expand our species just like any zoo. At the same time, we want to have better value in our educational program by having more than just two marine mammal species. We have been planning to get beluga whales for many years but we didn't bring them here until we had facilities prepared." So, what he's really saying is: "Yeah, the only reason we blew a million or so dollars on new facilities for our whales was not to accomodate the three whales we already have, to make them feel more comfortable and take them out of the inhumaine tanks we had before that we crammed them in to. No... see, i'm in it for the money. The only reason we spent the money is because we expect to make money in return, by importing more whales!! When we import the whales, the people will come to see them, and then we'll import more whales, and more and more! And soon we'll have whales coming out of our ears and our new facilities will be worth nothing because we'll have to keep 10-15 whales in them." Here's the best part - "Holer said he did not know the age of the whales, how long they had been living in captivity in Russia, nor why they were iinitially captured from the Black Sea. 'We only know that they came from a military base and they had been there for a while,' he said." See? isn't that great? I mean, those whales couldn't have undergone horrible experiments by the Russian gov. and now they are trying to get rid of them.... noooo... It's all on the up and up. Way to do your homework, Holer. kate (from the ever happy Niagara Region...) _______________________________________________________
