The Flaming Dedication

Many years ago I was asked by a lady to attend her self dedication, I told her that she didn't need anyone there to "officiate" but she said that wasn't the point and that she wanted me to be present during this important event in her life. I was honored and accepted the invitation. The night arrived and after I did the ritual "shower" and all my personal pre ritual rituals wee done I headed over to her house. Luna met me at the door looking nervous as is usually the case with those dedicating (pretty serious thing to dedicate). The house was all decorated, candles, incense soft celtic flavored goddess music filtering from her bedroom I think. We set up the alter in the middle of her living room, I let her meditate for a bit then we talked of how she wanted to perform the ritual. She was very serious and tended to be that way all the time when going into a ritual. I told her to relax and lighten up, all was going to go well and she shouldn't worry. As we started the self dedication ritual she was moved to do it skyclad, so we dropped our robes where we stood. After a minute I looked down behind her and realized she had dropped her robe on a candle...the robe a flaming! I grabbed it up, hurdled the couch and dining room table and slam dunked it into the sink to put it out (visualize a skinny naked guy with a flaming robe held in his left hand doing this). We both laughed about it and considered it the ice breaker then went on with the ritual. As we got to the cakes and ale portion of the ritual I poured the wine in the chalice in preparation. When it came time to drink the wine the chalice was empty! surely I had just thought I poured the wine but didn't, so I poured the wine and as she was about to pick it up we watched the wine level slowly lower until the chalice was empty. We looked at each other in curiosity. I looked closer and realized the chalice was cracked at the stem, the wine was all over the alter, so we drank form the bottle for the wine portion. The rest of the ritual went well.

So, lighten up, enjoy yourself and try not to be a stick in the mud. It's ok to have serious rituals, but try to enjoy yourself as well. Don't always be so serious and don't get to full of yourself.
