Did you know: Mountains were formed by vast uplifts in the earth's crust accompanied by folding and faulting (fracturing). On a mountain, a summit is the highest point, or peak, and the foothills are at the base. About 30% (58,000,000 sq mi)of the earth's surface is land.

Ocean

Note: The Mediterranean and the Black seas are included in the Atlantic Ocean; the Bearing and China seas are included in the Pacific Ocean; and the Arabian Sea is included in the Indian Ocean.

Did you know: Seawater is ordinary water containing dissolved mineral salts in an average concentration of 3.5% by weight. About 68% of the salt in seawater is sodium chloride, or ordinary table salt. The freezing point of seawater is 28.6 F. Water covers about 70% (139,000,000 sq mi) of the earth's surface.

  • Did you know: Rivers are sizable streams of fresh water flowing through natural channels in the land. Streams too small to be termed rivers are called by such names as brook, branch, or creek. A baby is 75 - 85% water and an adult man is 65 - 75% water.

    Swamp

Marshes are open, nearly treeless areas with low-growing plants such as rushes and grasses. Swamps are quite wooded with vegetation usually consisting of trees such as cypress, water tupelo, or mangrove. Bogs are wet, spongy ground extremely rich in slowly decaying vegetation.

Did you know: Antartica is the only continent in the world that has no marshes, swamps, or bogs.

    Waterfall

A stream of water that falls in one or more steep descents. Waterfalls are caused in many ways , but most are formed by a bed of hard rock that remains in a riverbed after softer rock around it has been worn away.
