Since the founding of this church in 1875, nine members have
entered the Christian ministry but we have had only one deaconess.
She is still active in our congregation and we wish to pay
tribute to her at this time(1994).
Miss Sara Cameron is a direct descendant of two of our pioneer
families. Her mother, before her marriage, was a nurse with the
Grenfell Mission in Labrador.
Sarah was born and raised in this community, received her
early education in our local schools, graduated from
New Glasgow High School and the Nova Scotia Normal College.
She took her deaconess training at the Presbyterian Missionary
and Deaconness Training College in Toronto.
She taught school for one year and did Mission work
in New Brunswick for a summer. In 1945, a
Designation Service was held in Zion Church and the Insignia
of the Order of Deasonesses was pinned on her by the
President of the W.M.S. (E.D.)
She served for three and a half years as a missionary
in British Guiana, returning in 1949 tomarry James Cunningham,
a local farmer and woodsman, who is now our senior elder.
They have raised a family of six children
and now have two grandchildren.
She is called on to take services throughout Pictou County
and beyond. We, as a Congregation, wish to take this opportunity
to thank her for the vital role she plays in our congregation
and community, and we ask God to continue
to bless her and her family.
