Rev. MacKinnon was born in Gabarus, Cape Breton County, N .S., in 1887 and
died on July 1, 1972. He was a very good carpenter and took great pride in keeping
up church properties.
When he was at Gairloch a beautiful manse was built in 1901 with 12 rooms.
There was a small barn on the property for the minister's horse. While there he also
kept a cow.
He built a beautiful wooden arch over the driveway at Gairloch with a Gaelic
inscription. When he died he was buried at Gairloch, the place he had chosen for
his final resting place. The old church was filled with people from allover the coun-
ty, Cape Breton and P.E.I.
There were four ministers in the pulpit plus others who sat in the congregation.
He was buried beside his first wife at the Gairloch cemetery. The bagpipes played at
the graveside service.
Mr. MacKinnon served pastoral charges in Pinehurst and Windsor in the Halifax
Lunenburg Presbytery, and Gairloch, Springhill, Barney's River, Little Harbour and
Pictou Landing, all within Pictou Presbytery. He was honoured by being elected
Moderator of the Synod of the Maritime Provinces in 1944. As well as a being a fine
churchman, he was a past grand master of the Loyal Orange Lodge and their
Chaplain. He was president of the St. Andrew's Society of Pictou County and an
honorary member of the Trenton Lions Club.
He is survived by a son, Hector, Pictou Landing, and a brother, James Alex,
Montague, P.E.I. Pictou Presbytery lost a dedicated and beloved pastor and friend.
He served at Garden of Eden and Blue Mountain in 1942.
