Dr. Blair was born in Strachur on Loch Fyne, Argyleshire,
to John Blair, his father, and his mother, Catherine MacGregor.
His father was a shepherd and was employed as manager
of a large sheep farm at Glendale.
Dr. Blair died in 1893 and is buried at Laggan, Pictou Co.
He was ordained at Barney's River on October 29, 1846.
More than two years later he accepted the call of Barney's River
and Blue Mountain and Garden of Eden.
He preached there from 1850-90. In 1851 he married Mary Sibella
of Brolas, Mull. She died in 1882. They had 6 children namely
Anna Margaret, Thomas Chalmers, Laughlan MacLean, John Knox,
Ewan Alexander and David Welsh.
Dr. Blair was the first settled minister of the Garden of Eden
and Blue Mountain and Barney's River charge.
Blair Presbyterian Church is named for him.
He received his education at Edinburgh Universiry and was
licensed to preach in 1844, immigrating to Canada two years later.
He is remembered as a rare and remarkable man and was in his day
the best Gaelic scholar in North America.
