Rev. J. W: Britton
"There passed away on December 20th, 1948, in Aberdeen Hospital,
New Glasgow, N.S., the Reverend John w: Britton,
a veteran of almost half a century's service to The Presbyterian
Church in Canada. Mr. Britton was born in Airdrie, Scotland,
on November 2, 1858, and came to this country as a boy of
nine when his father came to Westville, Nova Scotia, to install
machinery at the Drummond Mine in that town.
As a young man he worked in the mines at Westville and later
in the Y.M.C.A. movement. A possessor of a powerful singing voice,
he began doing evangelistic work and served in various town and
villages throughout the Maritimes.
Deciding on further studies, he went to Boston, Mass.,
to study theology, returning later on to his home province
to be ordained to the ministry on September 9th,1909.
He served in many places among which were St. Andrew's
and Saint John, New Brunswick, and Oxford, Pugwash, Wallace,
Blue Mountain, Hopewell and Sherbrooke, Nova Scotia.
He retired from the active ministry in 1941 after the death
of his wife, who was formerly Miss Rachael O'Neil ofWestville, N.S."
