Our Little Nina

We got Nina on Sunday, October 9th, 2005.

We bought her from some people in the city to be a friend for Max as he was lonely, missing Rocky.  She ended up being a rescue.
When visiting her seller's home, I was appalled.  The house was filthy and Nina was obviously being used as a baby machine.  Something about her eyes and demeanor endeared her to my heart.  Max really seemed to hit it off with her as well, so we purchased her.

When we got her home, she didn't have a name.  The former owners didn't want to name her for fear of becoming attached to her.  Likewise, she didn't know how to play with toys, and had never been on a walk.  The former owners stated her age at 3, but upon a vet examination, this age is doubtful.  She suffers from weak knees, excessive tartar build-up on the teeth, and a weird asthma-like attack when she gets excited.  I am able to control the latter by either patting her on the back or massaging her ribs.  She also tended to cower alot if you came towards her.

Even after 9 months, she still is very afraid of sudden noises and thunder, but she is improving.

Another thing she is improving on is actually acting like a dog.  Max has taught her the finer art of chasing squirrels and rabbits in the yard.   She used to just follow him when he chased, but now she is actually starting some chases on her own.  She loves walks now and is realizing that they can be fun and you can take care of business at the same time! :)  Recently, she has figured out what toys are for and will occasionally get one to chew.  She even played tug-of-war with Max the other day!   I couldn't believe my eyes!

After 9 months, she holds her ears up and is alert.  She never barked when we first got her and even lets out a woof or two now.

Max and Nina have bonded wonderfully.  When Nina went for her sterilization surgery, Max refused to eat.  When Max had to go overnight to the vet for surgery of his own, Nina would not eat or potty (inside or outside the house!).

Max and Nina compliment each other.  He, white with brown markings, bouncy and hyper.  Her, brown with white markings, reserved and loving to be scratched, rubbed, and a lap-warmer.  Max is a wonderful friend and mentor to her and I am so glad that I can provide a happy, safe home for a little Chihuahua named Nina.
