The Virtues of the Poor
Anas Ibn Malik narrated that the Poor sent a messenger to the Prophet (pbuh) and he said, Im the messenger to you from the Poor. The Prophet answered, welcome to you and to those who sent you, you have come to me from a group of people whom Allah loves. The man said, Oh prophet of Allah, the poor say that the rich people have gotten all the good, they can do pilgrimmage and we can't. They can pay charity and we cant. And if they have gotten sick, they can spend their money on treatment. The Prophet told him to tell the poor that whoever amongst them has patience and becomes satisfied with what Allah has given him, then Allah will give him three things - and none of the rich will get:
The first one is that there is in paradise (Jennah) a room made of red diamond. People of the Jennah look at it as you look at the stars in the night sky. Nobody will enter it except a poor prophet, a poor martyr, and a poor believer.
The second thing Allah will give them is that the poor will be entering Jennah before the rich half a day (and its about 500 years), where they will enjoy it as they want. Prophet Suliman will enter Jennah after all the prophets entered with forty years because of what Allah has given him in this Life.
The third thing is that if a poor one said sincerely Subhan Allah (glory to Allah), Al hamdulellah (thanks to Allah), la ilaha ill Allah (no god except Allah), and Allahu Akbar (Allah is the greatest), and even if the rich said the same and spent 10.000 Derhams (kind of money) along with it, the rewards for the poor will be greater. And so their rewards will be in all the good deeds.
So the man went back and told them what the prophet said they said oh Allah we are satisfied, we are satisfied.
Abu Dar one of the companions of the Prophet (pbuh) said: the Prophet (pbuh) advised him with seven things that he didnt leave doing them since. To love the poor and try to be close to them. To always look at those who are less in wealth than me, not those who have more than me. To keep in touch with my relatives even if they cut me off. To keep on saying La Haoula Wala kouwata Illa Billah (No strength or energy except that of Allah), because its one of the treasures of the good deeds. Not to ask people anything (which means not to depend on them and to rely on Allahs help). Not to be afraid from anyone other than Allah and not to be prevented by the fear of anyone from not saying the right things, and to say the truth and what is right though it may seem bitter and difficult.
Abu Hurairah narrated that the Prophet (pbuh) said Oh my Lord give those who love me their continence and subsistence. And give those who hate me a lot of money and children.
Also Allah ordered his Prophet in the Quran to love the poor and to get close to them: And keep thy soul content with those who call on their Lord morning and evening, seeking His Face; and let not thine eyes pass beyond them, seeking the pomp and glitter of this Life; nor obey any whose heart We have permitted to neglect the remembrance of Us, one who follows his own desires, whose case has gone beyond all bounds.18/28.
The story of this Verse is that one the head of the tribes asked the Prophet to let the poor companions out if he wanted him to listen to him because they are poor and he is wealthy honored. So Allah revealed this verse for that occasion.
One of the scholars said that the poor have five attributes: The rewards they get for their good deeds are more than those done by the rich, if the poor desired something and couldnt get it they will get good reward for it, they enter Jennah before the rich, their punishment in the hereafter is less, and that they remorse less than the rich in the hereafter because the rich will wish that they were poor.
So the poor should know the gratitude of Allah upon them, and that Allah didnt give them this life because He loves them. Also the poor shouldnt feel worried about the misfortunes of this life and that they should be patient on the hardships of life. They also should know that what Allah has saved for them in the hereafter is much better than whats in this life.
They should also remember that the prophet himself pbuh was poor.
Once the Prophet (pbuh) was sitting with the angel Gabriel. Gabriel told him that there is another angel who never came from the sky before, and that this angel has asked permission from Allah to come down to visit the Prophet. The new Angel came and said Assalam alaykom oh messenger of Allah, the Prophet replied wa alaykom assalam. The Angel said that Allah is offering to give the treasuries and the keys of everything that was never given to anyone before you and will be never given to anyone after you without you losing anything from what Allah has saved for you.
Or that Allah gathers and saves all what he offered to you until the Day of judgement.
The prophet said no Id rather get the second offer that Allah gathers and saves all what he offered to me until the Day of judgement.
The prophet said that he was offered the desert of Mecca to become gold and silver for him, and he said oh no my Lord Id rather become full some days so that I thank you my Lord and to feel hungry in other days so that I supplicate to you my Lord.
May Allah gathers us with the poor and needy in the hereafter and not with those who gained a lot of wealth, and may He provide us with our sufficient needs in this life so that we never need anyone but him.
