The Virtue of Knowledge
(in Islam as a religion)
Knowledge and seeking knowledge has a great significance in Islam:
The Prophet pbuh said, whoever seeks a path to knowledge Allah will make a path to Jennah (paradise) easy to him." And that Angels spread their wings to the one who seeks knowledge as a sign of satisfaction with what he/she is doing, and that whatever Allah created in Heaven and on earth and even the whales in the water ask forgiveness from Allah to the scholar. And that the degree the scholar has over the one who is dedicated to worship is like the status of the moon light over the rest of the planets. And that the scholars are the inheritors of the Prophets. And that the Prophets didnt leave - behind them after they died - money nor wealth but they left Knowledge as their inheritance. So whomever takes from this inheritance, then he/she has been given a lot of good fortune.
The Prophet pbuh said, The best of deeds on the face of this earth are three: seeking knowledge, fighting for the sake of Allah and work in order to spend on ones self and family." Because the one who seeks knowledge is beloved to Allah and the one who fight for the sake of Allah is honored to Allah (wali) and the one who works is a friend to Allah.
In another Hadeeth, Whoever wants to see someone who is free from punishment in Hell fire, then let him look at those who seek knowledge."
One of the wise men was asked: If Allah has inspired you that you are going to die at the end of this day what will be the best deed to do before you die? He said I would go and seek knowledge.
The Prophet said, One Scholar is harder on Satan than a thousand worshippers. This is because the scholar has knowledge about Satan and his tricks and cant be fooled with them.
Also the scholar or the one who has knowledge should be trustworthy over his/her knowledge and should also abide and work by that knowledge.
One of the Companions of the Prophet said: I dont fear to be asked on the day of judgement about what have I done. But I fear to be asked about what I have done with what I know (knowledge).
The Prophet pbuh said, Whoever seeks knowledge for 4 reasons will go to Hell fire. In order to show himself in front of other scholars, or to be arrogant with it among the silly people, or so people talk about him that he is a scholar, or in order to obtain money and high status from the Rulers and authorities."
One of the wise men said: The beginning of Knowledge is silence. The second is listening. The third is memorizing. The fourth is working with that knowledge and the fifth is spreading that knowledge among other people.
The Prophet pbuh said, Whoever visits a scholar then it is as if he has visited me. Whoever shake hands with a scholar then it is as if he has shaken hands with me. Whoever sits with a scholar then it is as if he has sat with me and whoever sits with me Allah will place seat beside me in Paradise.
It is said that the scholar who doesnt work or apply what he learned is like a candle which is providing light for others and burning itself.
May Allah make us from those who has knowledge and work with it.
