Being Thankful
By the name of Allah the merciful the compassionate
Allah said in the Holy Quran:
O ye men! It is ye that have need of Allah: but Allah is the One Free of all wants, worthy of all praise. 35:15
Allah's Blessings can be classified into two kinds:
1. The blessing of Existence; the He created us and caused our existence on this earth.
2. The blessing of Sustenance; and this is the cause for the development of our existence.
Allah said in the Holy Quran:
It is Allah Who sustains the heavens and the earth, lest they cease (to function): and if they should fail, there is none - not one - can sustain them thereafter: verily He is Most Forbearing, Oft-Forgiving. 35:41
When Allah sets His blessings upon us Man feels:
1. That He is Free and an inheritor to this world.
2. That Allah Provides for Him and that His sustenance is continuing.
3. Man begins admitting that these Blessings are from Allah.
Allah said:
Allah had helped you at Badr, when ye were a contemptible little force; then fear Allah; thus may ye show your gratitude. 3:123
And said:
And We wished to be gracious to those who were being depressed on the land, to make them leaders (in faith) and make them heirs. 28:5
And said:
Allah has promised, to those among you who believe and work righteous deeds, that He will, of a surety, grant them in the land, inheritance (of power), as He granted it to those before them; that He will establish in authority their religion, the one which He has chosen for them; and that He will change (their state), after the fear in which they (lived), to one of security and peace: `They will worship Me (alone) and not associate aught with Me.' If any do reject Faith after this, they are rebellious and wicked. 24:55
People might be obsessed by desires and so careless in regard to Allah's rights on them; like Salat (Prayers), Siam (Fasting). etc.
Some people might be trapped in the jail of sinning like those addicted to Alcohol, or those who commit adultery.
How can we recognize Allah's blessings upon us?
1. Allah would suddenly grant his servant the blessing of repentance and awakening from inadvertence because People seldom awake from inadvertence by themselves.
2. Allah would place His gratitude and blessings that are innumerable on his servants either by hardships or rewards.
3. A servant would start to feel the Love for his Lord and sense of thanking for Him and would start making Duaa (Supplication) for Allah to keep these blessings upon him.
4. A servant would start to work hard in order to preserve these blessings and this is the point where one senses the fear of the vanishing of these blessings.
Thanking and Praising Allah for His blessings is divided into three levels:
1. Thanking by the tongue; by saying Alhamdulellah (all praise to Allah).
2. Thanking by the senses; by obedience and worship to Allah.
3. Thanking by the heart; by confessing and admittance that these blessings are from Allah alone.
Allah said:
And ye have no good thing but is from Allah; and moreover, when ye are touched by distress, unto Him ye cry with groans. 16:53
Al-Junaid (a scholar) said: If Allah gave you a blessing don't use it in disobeying Him.
One of the wise men said, Admitting and confessing that all the blessings are from Allah is the Praise itself.
It was said that Allah told Prophet Daoud (David), "If you know that all the blessings are from me then you have thanked me and I will be pleased from you.
One of the wise men said, The blessings of Allah are unknown unless they are missed. Only those suffering from thirst can know the value of water not those living at the banks of rivers.
