You Don't Say

Solution: First thing to notice is that pieces of the numbers "one" through "eight" can be found at the inside edges of the letter groups on the sides of the grid. Each letter group on the left side pairs up with one on the right side to form an eight-letter word with one of the numbers 1-8 stuck inside it. For example, RUSO pairs with NETLING to make rusONEtling, which is the word "rustling" with the number 1 spelled out inside it. So, RUSTLING is written in the first line of the grid. The eight pairs are as follows:

rusO NEtling
kitT WOchens
liTHRE Estener
softeFO URned
cheFI VEstnut
whistS IXled
morSE VENtgage
goEIGH Turmets

Writing the eight words into the grid in order, gives:

rustling
kitchens
listener
softened
chestnut
whistled
mortgage
gourmets

The letters in the numbered squares (bolded above) spell the answer to "what have they [the eight words] got?" and is the solution to this puzzle - Silent Ts.
