First and Last

Solution: First thing to solve is the way the words are coded. To code a word, either its first or last letter is moved to the other end with a hyphen and it is adjusted one letter left or right in the alphabet accordingly. For example, in the first word "Block", the "B" has been moved to the right and shifted right to a "C" to make "lock-C". In "Liver", the "R" has been moved to the left and shifted left to a "Q" to make "Q-live". After decoding all the words, one is left with six pairs of words in categories. A third member of each category can be found by adding a letter to one of the eight extra words at the bottom. For example, "Liver" and "Brain" match up with "Heart", which can be formed by adding a "T" to the end of "hear". After coding the word "Heart", it can be written below "Q-live" and "rain-C" like below.

The five other sets are "Block, Ball, Top", "Hash, Crack, Booze", "Acorns, Branches, Leaves", "Bang, Strike, Hit", "Whole, Prime, Even". This leaves the letters "OSCRIM" in the six boxes, which can be written as "O-scrim" in the bottom left. The two leftover extra words "skim" and "ave" can be placed next to the "O-" and "-T" respectively to decode to "Skimp" and "Save". This all leads to the decoded solution word, "Scrimp".
