February's Winter Quarters
Well Boys:
I pray your Winter's Quarters are warm and comfortable. I'm sorry I've not written, but have been so very busy.
It was so good to see many of you at the meeting. Much thanks to the Chruch family for their hospitality which was so complete. Thank you Beth, Jim, Colin and Bryson.
The schedule is set. Please check it and call on Will or J. Church or myself if you have any questions.
My congratulations to our NCO's elect, and my heartfelt thanks to you the men for electing myself your captain. I pray to serve you and the army to my best, as you have the Army, yourselves, and our Country.
Best Health to you and your Families
ALL FOR THE UNION BOYS!!!! Your servant absolute,
J. W. Martin, Captain
First, thank you for electing me your first sergeant for another year. I will work hard to do well for you and continually improve the job that I do. This looks like it will be an exciting year for us. We are negotiating with Historical Films Group and may have the opportunity to portray our own unit receiving our beloved General Kearny's body after Chantilly. More on that to come.
This newsletter is so soon after the last because of the annual meeting. It will be quite brief, but full of information. Attached you will find another copy of the roster. I was contacted with many corrections to addresses and even given a few new email addresses. Check them out.
By the way, if you have access to the web, I've started my first web page. A copy of our newsletters will be put up there. I'm using this free web space to make information on good re-enacting (uniforms, history and mannerisms) on-line. As of this writing, all the articles I wrote on inexpensive authenticity for Co. A's newsletter last winter are on the page. There will be much more to come. If you can, check it out. The site is:

Let me know what you think. If you have anything to add, let me know. I want this to be our voice to the world wide web. We have years of experience in this organization and can give back to new re-enactors we haven't even met. By the way, while on line, check out the Cumberland Guard website at:

Below you will find the schedule of events for the year. I'm applying tomorrow for our place at the Greenfield Village Memorial Day re-enactment. I spoke yesterday with Brian Egen. He thinks they are full for the year but will speak for us as a reference on our quality of unit and is going to try to get us in. I'm sure we'll know more by the drill (that's another little hint, you really need to be at drill!).
Seriously, this drill is the first of the year and really important for as many as possible to make it. We have lots to accomplish, so everyone who comes should be ready to work. As always, bring warm headgear and gloves for the weather. Jim also encourages anyone who want to to bring modern footwear which is warmer. If you do, ALSO BRING YOUR PERIOD FOOTWEAR! We will try to have the media there and need to have period clothing for any photos/video recorded.
We are also inviting our brothers from Company A and the 8th to the drill. Drill is from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Please be prompt. As always, no powder or caps are allowed on the Delta College grounds!!! Be ready for a day of history, camaraderie and drill. If the weather is questionable, call Jim Martin the morning of drill. He will make the final call on cancellation. As always, we expect everyone to make drill. If you can't, please do all your brothers the courtesy of calling and letting us know you can't come so we know who to plan for and don't worry about traffic accidents.
