Overview
The main aim of the expedition is to fly a Pegasus Quantum Ultralight from the Gulf of Mexico to the Arctic Ocean. As a major part of this expedition, the crew will carry out initial research to identify a new migration route for the rare and endangered Whooping Crane.
This research will support and assist a groundbreaking specialist wildlife team, led by Bill Lishman, a Canadian made famous by his pioneering work on imprinting Canada Geese. He taught them to fly and migrate with an ultralight.
The Columbia Pictures film 'Fly Away Home'is based on his experiences with the geese. Over the last few years, Bill and his team, in association with the US Geological Survey, have refined and enhanced their knowledge through working with Sandhill Cranes.
They have taught cranes to fly and migrate with ultralights, and the birds have successfuly returned North on their own the following Spring. The ultimate aim is to return the magnificent Whooping Crane to its historic haunts on the eastern side of America.
