Mountain Biking In Maine
Waldo Mountain- Frankfurt Maine-
If you like steep downhills with awesome views, this is your
trail. From the top, ride down the "Slickrock" granite
(as close to Moab as you will get in Eastern Maine) and then let
it fly down the dirt access road the last 3 miles. Total
elevation loss/gain 1100 feet. Also, there are a lot of logging
trails in the area, you can't miss.
The Outback Mnt Bike Park- Winterport, Maine- ok, it's
really not a mountain bike park, it's my backyard, but I have
around 2 miles of flat, technical singletrack ( if the bugs don't
get you first!)
Sand Pits- Hampden Maine- There is one particular sand pit
that we hang out at, and work on. We (Me, Pete, Conor, Anders,
McInnis, Barns, and a bunch of other people) along with the BMX
pro, and chief jump making engineer, Todd, have build some great
jumps. Some you will make you puke, but the table top and rythem
section are definatly do-able.
Sunday River- Bethel, Maine- this place is one of the
best. Taking the chairlift to the top and blasting down the
mountain is one of the biggest rushes you will get. If you have
never gone...GO..it's the best.
Troll Valley- Farmington- This course is located on cross
country ski trails but don't let that fool you. There is plenty
of downhills and singletrack to be tamed.
Essex Street- Bangor- This loop is pretty technical and
has a lot of roots and rocks and is mostly singletrack.
Backcountry Excursions of Maine- Limerick- Not very many
people know about this operation, but that might be a good thing.
This outfit offers guided treks through some of the best trails
in Western Maine. You can go for a weekend, eat great homemade
food and even sleep in a Yurt! All while meeting other bicycling
enthusiests and finding some great unknow spots. The best thing
is, you have your own guide so you will never get lost. Call
Clifford Krolick for more info (207)625-8189.
Sugarloaf, USA This course features a crazy downhill
singletrack (that I love) called the Widowmaker Mile. I wonder
why they call it that? The rest is really cool too, mostly double
track, but lookout! There is one BIG climb!
Alden Hill, Gorham - My pick for the best trail on the Maine
NORBA race circuit. Located right on the USM campus by the water
tower, the 4+ mile trail offers great singletrack with very
little mud! There are some short uphills, but nothing that will
kill you, and there is plenty of downhill for the kamikazi
seekers. All and all, a great loop!
