 PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

My Dear Queens Villagers:

Welcome to another civic year, a special one as it will be completed in the new millennium.  I hope that the last summer of this century was both enjoyable and memorable for you.

During the summer, your civic was attending to business by testifying against the building of a transient motel on Jamaica Avenue at a Community Board 13 meeting, supporting the "cease and desist law" in a hearing organized by Senator Frank Padavan (please refer to article in the news page), attending the National Night Out Against Crime In Our Neighborhoods, seeking solutions to problems that did not take the summer off.

Although there ae a few minor problems still to be resolved, the HWQ 254 Project, begun in the fall of 1995, is virtually completed.  We met with the Project Engineer on September 7 for the final walk-through.  Lawns that were uprooted by the construction will be seeded in late September and early October.  Our sincere thanks go to everyone who helped to bring this massive project to a successful conclusiion.  And we especially thank Queens Borough President Claire Shulman and Community Board 13 Chairperson Sue Noreika for their help.

Our best wishes to Richard Burns, President of the Queens Braddock Civic Association, for a speedy recovery from heart by-pass surgery.

There are many street signs missing in our community.  You can help your civic replace street signs by giving us locations at this month's meeting or by calling me at (718) 468-2160.

Loud music and loud parties were a very big problem in our community this summer.  Excessive noise is not only unlawful, but it diminishes our quality of life.  Let us have more concern for our neighbor's right to peace and tranquillity and give him or her the respect and consideration we expect for ourselves.  Excessive noise should be reported to the 105th Police Precinct at (718) 776-9090 or the Quality of Life Hotline, (888) 677-5433.

There is much to be done to make Queens Village "second to none."  Collectively, it will be easier.  So join us as a member or advertise in our Newsletter if you own a business.  Together we can accomplish most anything we set our sights on.

I hope to see you at our September meeting.

                                                 Best wishes to all,

THANKS A HEAP!

We thank the 74 new members who joined our organization during the past civic year and also those of you who renewed your membership.  We now have the largest membership in our 42 year history.  And we expect to grow yet larger and even more effective as the new millennium dawns.  If you have been thinking about joining us, you can do so at our regular monthly meetings or by using the membership application form in this Newsletter.  We need you to increase our strength and our clout as we fight for programs and City services to maintain and improve our quality of life.

Cease And Desist Law

Our State Senator Frank Padavan has worked assiduously to renew the "cease and desist law" that gives homeowneres in our communities protection against harassment by real estate brokers and their agents, via phone calls, flyers, and personal contact, with unsolicited request to list their homes for sale.  This protection not only ensures your privacy, but helps to maintain quality, stable residential neighborhoods.  It also deers "block-busting" and other discriminatory and unethical practices by disreputable realtors.  But you must act quickly as the current "cease and desist" list expires on October 25, and names on that list will not be rolled over.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Dear Queens Villagers:

As our last civic year in this century winds down, your new Executive Board will be sworn in by Queens Borough President Claire Shulman on June 15, 1999, with the promise of being more vibrant and effective in the new millennium.

HWQ 254 is now completed, but final inspections have not been made.  If you have any complaints about the construction, please call me at 468-2160 or Community Board 13, 464-9700.

Theresa Serrano, a graduate this year of Our Lady of Lourdes School, will be awarded the Queens Village Civic Association Educational Award at this month's meeting.  She will be entering Mary Louis Academy in the fall.  Our congratulations and best wishes go to this special young lady and her family.

We gratefully thank our advertisers who make the publication of this fine newsletter possible.  We urge you to purchase their products and utilize their services.  We also thank Senator Frank Padavan, Assembly woman Barbara Clark, Councilman Sheldon Leffler, and Community Board 13 (Sue and Sally) and their staffs for their help and support.  We look forward to the continuing partnership with them to improve the quality of life in our community.  Last, but certainly not least, I and the Executive Board especially thank our great and growing membership for their unswerving support and for electing us to another term.  We will not disappoint you.

As the new millennium dawns, we pledge to work together with neighboring civic groups and their leaders for the common good of all our communities.

A reminder to parents that a good education for your children includes lessons in respect, courtesy, and civic duty.  Have a safe and enjoyable and healthy summer.  I hope to see you on June 15.

                                                       Yours respectfully,

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

My Very Dear Queens Villagers,

Greetings to everyone.  Summer is just around the corner, and spring cleaning is in full swing.  Don't forget our responsibility to clean and maintain our sidewalks and 18 inches into our newly paved streets.  A good broom will do wonders.

Another civic year is almost over.  On May 18, I and our entire Executive Board will be reelected for another term.  This is a big step for the continuation of programs and policies we are pursuing to improve our quality of life.  At our last Executive Board meeting on May 1, I expressed to all the members my sincerest gratitude for working together with me on issues that are beneficial to our community.  I am blessed with having the best and hardest working board members.  Hats off to all of them.

HWQ 254 is for all purposes completed.  With our new streets in place, now is a good time to keep our yards clean, our lawns freshly cut, new trees regularly watered, garbage properly contained and recycled, our dogs curbed and cleaning up after them as required by law.  I believe that we have a civic duty to speak to our neighbors if their yards and lawns are unkempt.  Ask them to please cleanup.  It will help to improve our quality of life.

A reminder that the Community School Board Elections are on May 18.  Remember to vote for the following candidates endorsed by our association in the order given:  1)  Morshed Alam,  2)  Rosa E. Browne, and  3)Robert Howell.  Your support is gratefully appreciated.

Sadly, the Queens Village Bellerose Memorial Day Parade has been canceled,  although there will be a Memorial Service in Veterans Plaza, Springfield Boulevard and Jamaica Avenue,  Beginning at 11:00 A. M.  I urge you to attend.   I am asking all civic groups and other participants in the Memorial Day Parade Committee to get together to plan for a parade for next year's millennium.  We must never forget our veterans.

Please call me at (718) 468-2160 if you have items for our Newsletter.  Best wishes, and I hope to see you at this month's meeting.  Fly our Flag proudly on Memorial Day and always.

                                                           Yours respectfully,
