In Honor of Saint Jude

The following prayers, messages and true stories on this page are taken mainly from the Saint Jude Novena Prayer book obtained from The Vancouver Shrine of St. Jude B.C., Canada.Rev. Richard Gagnon, Pastor. I have found this Prayer Book to be very inspirational and interesting.I am hopeful you will find it as rewarding as did I.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR

Dear Devotees of St. Jude,
I am privileged to be associated with St. Jude's Shrine and it is with great joy that I commend to you this little booklet in honour of this Patron of Difficult and desperate Cases, St. Jude Thaddeus, Apostle of the Lord.

Vancouver's Shrine in honour of St, Jude origionally began as a small parish in May 1944 centering around a little wooden church on Renfrew Street.Devotion to this special saint grew steadily over the years and many accounts of prayers answered have been recorded in the hearts of our parishioners. Eventually, the parish was designated an official Shrine of St. Jude in 1960 and a large modern church built only four years later.

The year 1989, celebrated the 25th anniversary of the building of the new church and these years have seen a tremendous growth in devotion to our patron saint.During our jubille celebrations, the church and Shrine were renovated and now we have a beautiful new Shrine Chapel which contains relics of St. Jude from his tomb in Rome.
Devotion to St. Jude has become part of Vancouver's spiritual life for many years and as pastor, I encourage your devotion and your enthusiasm in spreading knowledge of this Patron of Difficult and Desperate Cases. We ask St. Jude to pray for us and our needs as he remains close to Jesus the Risen Lord through Whom all good things come.We also, as devotees of St. Jude, invite you to visit the Shrine, spend time in prayer and assist at our weekly Novena Mass every Wednesday evening.

Yours in Christ,

Rev. Richard Gagnon

DEVOTION TO ST. JUDE
Helper in Great Need

The origins of devotion to St. Jude as the patron of difficult and deaperate cases are nearly as obscure as the details of the life of the great Apostle: These origins stem from a spontaneous devotion among the faithful themselves, prompted possibly by the fact that according to tradition, St. Jude was a near relative, a "cousin" of Jesus and that as a child, he was a playmate of the God-Man.

This holy apostle bears the surname "Thaddeus" (meaning amiable or loving), which distinguishes him from Judas Iscariot, the traitor. Besides the apostle James tje Less, Jude had two other brothers, who togather with himself are called the "brethern" of Jesus, which in Hebrew signifies a near relationship. It is believed his father was Cleophas who was probably a brother to St. Joseph.Because of his fearless confession of the Resurrection of Christ, Cleophas was put to death by the Jews and thus won the crown of martyrdom. The mother of our apostle was Mary of Cleophas, possibly a cousin of the Blessed Virgin, who with Mary stood by the Cross of Jesus on Calvary.
St. Jude is shown, traditionally, as creeying the image of Jesus in his hand. This represents, according to tradition, our principal source of knowledge of the saint, the imprint of the Divine Contenance that was entrusted to him by Our Lord. The circumstances were these: King Abagaro of Edessa, who suffered from leprosy, sent word to Jesus asking Him to come and cure him. With his request, we are told, the king sent an artist to return with a picture of the Master.

Impressed with his great faith, Our Lord pressed His image on a cloth and gave it to St. Jude to bring to the King of Edessa and cure him.The king was cured by St. Jude and together with most of his subjects was converted to Christianity.

After the death and resurrection of Jesus, St. Jude travelled throughout Mesopotamia for a period of ten years preaching and converting many to Christianity.

He probably returned to Jerusalem for the Council of the Apostles and then, he and St Simon visited Libya and Persia where many more converts were made.

St. Jude died a martyr's death.Tradition tells us that he was clubbed, possibly to insensibility, and his head was then shattered with a broad axe.Sometime after his death, St. Jude's body was brought to Rome and placed in a crypt under the principal altar of St. Peter's Basilica.

Pope Paul III, in a brief dated September 22, 1548, granted a plenary indulgence to all who visited his tomb on his feast day which is celebrated on October 28.

NOVENA PRAYER TO ST. JUDE

A favorite way of invoking St. Jude is through novenas.A novena is a devotion performed for nine consecutive days or nine other consecutive periods. To make a novina, one should go to Confession, assist at Mass and receive Holy Communion. One should also have great confidence in God and in the intercession of the Saint in whose honour the Novena is said.

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

O GLORIOUS APOSTLE, ST. JUDE THADDEUS, true kinsman of Jesus and Mary, I salute you through the most Sacred Heart of Jesus.Through this Heart O praise and thank God for all the graces He has bestowed upon you.Humbly, I implore you ti look down upon me with compassion.Oh, despise not my poor prayer; let not my trust be confounded. To you God has granted the privilege of aiding mankind in the mostdesperate cases.

Oh, come to my aid that I may praise the mercies of God.All my life I will be grateful to you and will be your faithful friend until I can thank you forever in Heaven. Amen.

Blessed Apostle with confidence we invoke your aid.
St. Jude help of the hopeless, aid me in my distress.

PRAY FOR US that we, before death, may expiate all our sins by sincere repentance and the worthy reception of the holy Sacraments.
PRAY FOR US that we may lead a life worthy of our baptism.
PRAY FOR US that we may be admitted into the company of the blessed to rejoice in the presence of our God forever.

St. Jude, glorious apostle, faithful servant and friend of Jesus, the name of the traitor has caused you to be forgotten by many. But the Church honours and invokes you universally as the patron of difficult and desperate cases.Pray for me who am so miserable.Make use, I implore you, of that particular privilege accorded to you to bring visible and speedy help where help was almost despaired of.Come to my assistance in this great need that I may receive the consolation and help of Heaven in all my sufferings particularly...( here make your personal requests )...and that I may bless God with you and all the elect throughout all eternity.
St. Jude, pray for us and for all who honour you and invoke your aid and intercede for us at the throne of God.

(Now say the Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be)

PRAYER FOR THE SICK

Dear Jesus, Divine Physician and Healer of the Sick, we turn to you in this time of illness.O dearest Comforter of the Troubled, alleviate our worry and sorrow with Your gentle love and grant us the grace and strength to accept this burden.Dear God, we place our worries in Your hands. We place our sick under your care and humbly ask that You restore Your servent ( Name... ) to health again.Above all, grant us the grace to acknowledge Your Holy Will and know that whatsoever You do, You do for the love of us.Amen.

PRAYER IN GRIEVOUS AFFLICTION
St Jude Thaddeus, relative of Jesus and Mary, glorious Apostle and martyr, renowned for your virtues and miracles, faithful and prompt intercessor for all who honour you and trust you!Powerful patron and helper in grievous affliction, I come to you and entreat you with all my heart to come to my ais, for you have received from God the privilege of assisting with manifest help those who almost despair.Look down upon me; my life is a life of crosses, my days are full of tribulation, and my paths are strewn with thorns and scarcely one moment passes without my tears and sighs. My soul is enveloped in darkness, disquietude, discouragement, mistrust; yes, sometimes even a kind of despair preys upon me.Divine Providence seems lost to sight, and faith seems to falter in my heart.Overwhelmed by these thoughts, I see myself surrounded by a dark cloud. You cannot forsake me in this sad plight!I will not depart form you until you have heard me.Oh! Hasten to my aid.I will thank God for the graces bestowed upon you, and will propagate your honour according to my power.Amen.

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING
(to be said when a favour has been granted)

It was revealed to St. Gertrude that it is a source of great joy to the saints when we praise and thank God for the graces and privileges He has bestowed upon them.Devotees of St. Jude should recite the following act of thanksgiving frequently.

O most Sweet Lord Jesus Christ, in union with the unutterable praise with which the Most Holy Trinity extols Itself and which thence flows upon Yoursacred humanity, upon Mary, upon all the angels and saints, I praise, glorify and bless You for all the graces and privileges You have bestowed upon Your chosen apostle and intimate friend, Jude Thaddeus.I implore You for the sake of his merits, grant me Your grace, and through his intercession come to my aid in all my needs, but especially at the hour of death degin to strengthen me against the rage of my enemies.Amen.

(Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be three times)
