The 1930s tea-room

--previous--

--next--

They went into the tea room. The finest place to meet
Dressed up from head to toe, amongst society's elite

An elegant glance about the room. And disaster! There she sat
A woman dressed to kill, in the very self-same hat.

For a miserable ten minutes she sat stiff and drank her tea
Thinking big signs saying 'matching' were put up for all to see

Then she thought, I'll make a joke of it, for there's nothing to be said
So she caught the woman's eye and she pointed to her head

She gave a little smile, and raised a small iced bun
A playful invitation to join her in the fun

The woman's face stayed frozen, like ice on an arctic bay
She didn't see the joke at all and quickly turned away

How silly! Why not see the joke? What else was there to do?
She gave her one more chance to laugh about it too

A finger to the temple. A smile, a shake of the head
The woman, frozen, caught her eye. The joke went down like lead

Back home she thought how tiresome, to be so serious like that
But in the hallway mirror saw, she'd worn a different hat!
