Applying The Finish The finish I usually use is applied in three stages.
After sanding all of the assemblies, a seal coat of sanding sealer is applied with an HVLP sprayer. The second step is to apply a color coat which consists of an oil based pigmented stain which is formulated to my specifications by the paint manufacturer. Finally two coats of nitrocellulose lacquer are applied.
The pictures at the right show the "Finish Room" at My Shop. It is nothing more than a painters tarp spread on the floor of my garage, and a piece of painters plastic stapled to the edges of the garage door.
If you try this at home, be aware that Lacquer solvents are highly explosive. Good ventilation is a must, as is a necessity for keeping the vapors out of the garage if you have anything inside that can cause a spark which will ignite the vapors.
I close off the front of the enclosure with the painters plastic when spraying the finish. Although the actual time spent applying the finish is normally measured in seconds (90 seconds to apply the finish to both sides of the door) you will be in the spray area for several minutes before and after spraying. It is very important that you wear a mask that will keep the vapors out of your lungs.
