The City of Vaughan is located along the northwestern boundary of Metropolitan Toronto within the Greater Toronto Area which has a contiguous population of 4.8 million. Vaughan has a population of 141,232 and is considered one of the fastest growing communities in Canada.

Future Growth
Future land use and development decisions in the City of Vaughan will be guided by the policies. of OPA 400. With an expected population of 238,000 by the year 2011, the document establishes a cohesive structure for Vaughan's future development. Three new urban village and expansion areas have been designated to accommodate this new growth.
Urban Village #1
The development of Urban Village #1 will connect the existing communities of Woodbridge and Maple. Covering an area of 1,285 hectares, the Village will ultimately accommopdate 16,000 housing units, comprising a population of 45,000-50,000.
Urban Village #2
Between 50,000 and 61,000 people will reside in the Urban Village #2 area once developed. Linking the communities of Maple and Thornhill-Vaughan, the Village will include 21,000 housing units covering a total of 1,535 hectares.
Woodbridge Expansion Area
The Woodbridge Expansion Area will connect the existing communities of Woodbridge and Kleinburg. The expansion area covers an area of 330 hectares and will accommodate a population of approximately 15,000 within 4,500 housing units.
