The Toronto urban area is now going through a major reorganization of its municipal government. The process involves the political and administrative structures -- local delivery of high quality, reliable services to the 2.4 million residents throughout the newly formed City of Toronto will continue.

Toronto's strength comes from a multitude of vibrant communities where people enjoy reliable services that enhance the high quality of life which made Toronto internationally known as a great place to visit, live and work.

The government of the new Toronto will support these communities through a more centralized administration, continuing to provide services from 2,600 access points. Libraries, homes for the aged, community centres, child care centres, recreation facilities and social services offices will remain in communities. There will be no change in fire, ambulance or police services, and roads, highways and public transit services will continue unchanged.

Now known as civic service centres, the city halls of the former area municipalities will still be places to get marriage licences, register births and deaths and get answers to questions about services. Ceremonial meetings of the new council will be held at Toronto City Hall, while regular meetings will take place at Metro Hall.

The last major restructuring of municipal government took place 44 years ago when the Province of Ontario created the metropolitan level of government, in 1953. Twelve area municipalities and the City of Toronto were placed under the umbrella of a metropolitan government which provided services in common to the entire urban area. In 1967 the 13 municipalities were reduced to six within the metropolitan government.

During the last several years, the increasing difficulty of providing quality services within an ever-tighter economy brought a call from many voices for another change in local government structure and responsibilities. The province passed Bill 103, The City of Toronto Act, in April 1997. The new City of Toronto officially came into being on January 1, 1998, amalgamating seven governments into one.
