Otala lactea

**Otala lactea**
Otala lactea
or Helix lactea
Family Helicidae
Sometimes called the "vineyard snail," "milk snail," or "Spanish snail." Originally from North Africa and Spain. Introduced to SE U.S., Bermuda, Cuba, and elswhere. Most of the pictures don't show it's true colors, but the third one down is pretty good. The lighter stripes, or spiral bands, are a white or cream color and the darker stripes are a reddish brown or dark brown to almost black and measures about 26 to 35mm in diameter. The all white ones I'm not too sure of. They may be a different species, but I have found some old (abandoned :-) shells that looked like that. I don't know if they were just sun bleached or just a different color variation.
Considered by some to taste better than H. aspersa.
They are just as easy to feed and breed as Helix aspersa, eating most any vegetable or fruit fed to them.

Thank you Maureen Rose (and your daughter) for the use of your pictures :-)
