          "HIS DAY

He walked into the ring today, His satin coat aglow. He faced the Judge and seemed to say, "I am here to win, you know."

"Behold my beauty unsurpassed, A princely guy, I am. I'm royally bred throughout my past, Find better if you can."

An egotist this boy of mine? I'm sure the Judge agreed. But when he searched his heart and mind, He gave him Best-of-Breed.

He won the Group, with flash and fire And never missed his stride. He strutted like a country squire Beside himself with pride.

Now here he comes, his head held high Stepping light and proud. True and black, his eager eyes Survey the waiting crowd.

He plants his feet and firmly stands, Somehow, he seems to know, The Trophy in the Judge's hands, Proclaims him BEST-IN-SHOW.

          -Barbara Andrews

          Here is how it's done.....

In AKC point shows, all the dogs of one breed are shown together in a series of eliminations. First all the male dogs of that breed are shown, separated into classes (which the exhibitor may choose from to enter their dog in, as applicable). These include Puppy Dog (6-9 mos of age), Puppy Dog (9-12 mos of age), and sometimes a 12-18 mos of age class; Bred By Exhibitor (BBE); American Bred, Open. An exhibitor enters their dog in the class where they qualify, of course, but also where they think their dog will do its best, either from the standpoint of it usually being a class with small entries, or one where it will be more on a par with like animals. So a young puppy who has not been shown much might be put in the 6-9 Puppy class and be judged against other like puppies, and have a better chance of winning the class. A puppy can also be entered in any of the other classes where it qualifies.

There are up to four placements awarded in each class - 1st through 4th. The classes are shown in order and the winners of each class and the second place winner wait after their class has been judged (outside the ring) until all classes have been judged, and then each of the first place winners go back in the ring together to have the best of all of them decided, and a runner-up (Winners Class). This win is called Winners Dog (WD) and is the first level at which points are awarded.

Then, all the female dogs are judged the same way, divided by classes, until a Winners Bitch (WB) has been selected and a runner-up (runner-ups are called Reserves - as in RWB).

The number of points won is determined by how many other dogs of the same breed and same sex were defeated that day, at this level. The scale of points is determined yearly by AKC and is based on how many dogs of each breed in each of its divided geographical areas of the country are registered with AKC each year. These numbers are published in the AKC Gazette in May of every year, and for convenience are also now printed below the show's breed entry listings in each show catalog (purchased at the show).

The last class for each breed is called Best of Breed (BOB) or Best of Variety (BOV) in the case of breeds that are identical except for size or color or coat and are divided by these - as in the case of Toy, Miniature and Standard Poodles; or Smooth, Longhaired, and Wirehaired Dachshunds. In this class, already finished champions of record are entered and come into the ring first, followed by that day's Winners Dog and Winners Bitch. These are all judged against each other for Best of Breed, and Best of Opposite Sex to Best of Breed (BOS) - additionally only Winners Dog and Winners Bitch are judged against each other for Best of Winners (BOW), regardless of whether or not they were selected as well for BOB or BOS.

So it is possible for the same dog to be awarded 1st in its class, then Winners (Dog or Bitch), then Best of Breed OR Best of Opposite Sex to Best of Breed, and also Best of Winners.

There are points assessed at each win level starting with Winners class. And each time you beat other dogs as you go in for more elimination, they are added to your day's total number of dogs in your breed, etc. that you defeated that day. The most points that can be awarded in any one show on one day anywhere in the country is 5 points. If there were a whole-country dog show on one day and your dog won over every other dog in the USA, it still would not win more than 5 points for that show.

It takes a total of 15 points to earn a championship. Two of those wins must be major wins of 3, 4 or 5 points. Hence the designation "major wins." Also, the total number of points must have been won by entry into at least three shows, and the two major wins must have been won under different judges. And I think that the rule passed that now a dog has to win at least one point after one year of age.

So it is possible to finish a dog in three days - and it has been done - but not often, and it has to have been a SUPER dog. It has also happened that it was a puppy that achieved this.

After all of the individual breeds have been shown in different rings, the BOB winners are then shown against each other in the applicable Group (seven of them) for a Group winner to be decided (and 2nd, 3rd, 4th). Min Pins are in the Toy Group.

The each of the Group winners of the seven Groups are shown together to select Best in Show (BIS). In the breed-level judging, they are judged not only against the breed standard, but against each other. At the Group level, they are judged only against their breed standard.

          Australian Variation

          From Allison

There are placements only up to 3rd...after all the males classes have been judged the winners in the classes then are judge together to pick the Challenge Dog and Reserve Challenge Dog. Only the Challenge will recieve pts, there are none for Reserve. Points are allocated for 1 pt for every dog of the same sex competed against, plus five pts for the Challenge. Maximum of 25 pts for any show, minimum of 6 pts, it takes 100 pts to get an Australian Champion title. I'm not sure on Grand Champion, I think it maybe three hundred. After the Challenge line up the Bitch classes are judge to the same conclusion. The two Challenge dogs are then run against one another for Best Of Breed, again there are no point allocations for this, ONLY for Challenge. After the best of breed judging, it's time for Best puppy etc.. The winners from the classes are run against one another.....IE Puppy Bitch with Puppy Dog to get Best Puppy. Best of classes then go on for the In-Groups. If they acheive a win in the In-Groups, they go on for the General Specials....or In Shows.

Here's my "woodle baby" Stardust - Fla. was her very 1st show! I love her to pieces - she is soooo sweet and I'm so glad I now have her daddy too as I'm finding out all his pups are "lovers". I think there were 74 puppies (or more?) in the Sweeps that day (not sure) - I was so excited I forgot to buy the "dang" catalog!
