Summertime Thoughts by ~Shelli~
Cicadas singing on my verandah
that summer song,
That each year,familiarises
me with the hot season.
A memory of years ago, when
the beach was welcoming,
And the sun, a friend, not
an enemy, was always with us.
Boiling days and hottest
of nights, it was a
long lasting furnace during
the school holidays.
Brown little pixies we were,
flaunting in the daylight.
No relief at night, only
a whisper of a breeze.
And our bathtub, our indoor
pool!
Summer lasted forever, it
projected happiness
and carefree times.
Iceblocks and cordial, watermelon
and jelly,
the smell of juicy tanning
lotions.
The public pool, bumper
to bumper people,
Desperate for a cooling.
Short dresses and honey
hair, JC sandals,
Now, who I ask, remembers
them?
Summer has aged and flashed
its warning
to us now,
Be wary, be careful, no
more sunkissed noses.
Messages- Cover your face
and don a hat.
Slip, Slop, Slap- Ha!
The season of summer will
always smell
sweet and conjur my memories
to always
Bring out true happiness.
