The first time I saw Senator was June 1, 1981, and he was everything his
pedigree and baby photos had promised. Senators sire is Breezys
Top Star, a son of the famous Mr.
Breezy Cobra. His dam, Kinglows
Satin Doll, is a daughter of Foxfire, and she is also the dam of the
champion, Kinglows Charade.
Senator
was used as my breeding stallion until my divorce in 1986. Having no facilities
to keep a stallion I was faced with the difficult decision - to geld him or sell
him. Remembering the poor condition in which he was returned to me from a lease,
I determined that I could not let this happen to him again, and so had him
gelded.
Senator
and I developed a special bond through many hours of trail riding over the next
few years, improving my riding abilities, and building back confidence for
riding after my back surgery in 1988.
In 1992
we tried Competitive Trail, scoring respectably at the first level in one ride
of 20 miles and another of 23 1/2 miles. Senator has never been shod, and
surprised many people with his soundness, going barefoot on both rides. Since
then we have just ridden for pleasure, with a little driving practice thrown in.
In 1995,
re-married and more financially secure, I decided it was time to consider a
future replacement for Senator. Naturally, I wanted one of his offspring,
and was thrilled when I had the opportunity to buy back my favorite of
Senators daughters, Four-L
April Dawn. Reunited with Senator, after being apart for over 7 years, they
immediately recognized each other, and Senator wouldn't let her out of his
sight! He, like me, didn't want to lose her again.
Two
years later I bought another of Senators daughters, Four-L
Black Magic, and had a very interesting experience when she foaled the
following year. At that time, I still had my horses boarded out, and when
Magics colt was about two weeks old, we put them back in the pasture with
about 6 other horses. One of the mares had a very strong reaction to the colt,
chasing after him, rearing up, and trying to hit him with her front hooves.
Magic ran around the fence line, winding up in a corner, with a steep slope on
the open side. Senator placed himself between Magic and the other mare,
threatening her each time she approached the foal. Finally, he chased her right
across the field, away from Magic and his grandson, then pranced back towards
Magic, head held high, looking like a young stallion instead of an 18 year old
gelding. I shouted Good boy, Senny, and his head and knees came up higher,
looking so pleased with himself. I felt quite proud of him, and he knew it! I
was happy that another boarder was there to see this exhibition - he certainly
scored points for the Morgan breed that day!
Now that
we are finally on our own small acreage in the country, this is where Senator
will spend the rest of his days, along with his daughter April
(Four-L April Dawn), and granddaughter Lady (Four-L
Dawns Lady in Red).

"I will
not change my horse with any that treads -
When I bestride him I soar, I am a hawk.
He trots the air; the earth sings when he touches it.
The basest horn of his hoof is more musical than the pipe of Hermes ...
He is the color of the nutmeg and of the heat of the ginger . .
He is pure air and fire, and the dull elements
Of earth and water never appear in him.
But only in patient stillness while his rider mounts him . .
It is the prince of palfreys. His neigh is like
the bidding of a monarch, and his countenance
Enforces homage." - William Shakespeare
