DOWNED ANIMAL PROTECTION ACT INTRODUCED IN THE SENATE!

WHAT:  S. 267, the Downed Animal Protection Act, would make it unlawful for any stockyard owner, market agency, or dealer to transfer or market non-ambulatory livestock, and for other purposes.  This would be a huge victory for animals because countless cows and other livestock suffer needlessly painful and cruel deaths once they are "downed" (unable to walk to auctions, etc.), either from being dragged, abandoned, or otherwise discarded.

WHO:  U.S. Senators AKAKA, REID, LEVIN, SCHUMER, GRAHAM, GREGG, TORRICELLI, BOXER, and SMITH of New Hampshire introduced the bill on February 6, 2001.

WHAT TO DO:  If one of your senators is listed above, please write to express your gratitude for their compassion and action on behalf of animals (not to mention on behalf of meat-consumers…who wants to eat a cow that was so ill before it was killed that it couldn't even walk???).  If your U.S. Senator is not one of the above, please write to encourage him or her to co-sponsor and/or support this Act.

Dear Senator Feinstein:

As a California resident who cares deeply about the welfare and safety of animals, I urge you to support S.267, the Downed Animal Protection Act.  As you may know, downed animals inevitably suffer a fate far worse than even that of a healthy "food-animal".  Downed animals are frequently abandoned, dragged and abused.  Of all animals, these are the ones that need and deserve our protection and compassion most of all.  The food industry has debilitated them to the point of being non-ambulatory and yet they are offered no defense against even crueler and more despicable treatment.  Please support this bill so that the most vulnerable creatures in our society are afforded at least a minimal level of protection against greed, apathy and inhumanity.  Thank you for your attention to this important matter.

Sincerely,

Christina Johnson
