PICS OF AL AND PEGGY
The first ferrets I'd ever met

When My ex-girlfriend, Ramona, and I first started getting serious, it was natural that I meet her two ferrets. They were my first introduction to the wonderful world of carpet sharks.

Neither their Mommy nor I took many photos of these two little ones until it was too late. The photos here are at least a couple of years old.

This little guy is Al. This photo was taken before he received his eye injuries (and, no, he's not possessed). The first was in the Summer of '98. Something - we never did figure out what - scratched the surface of his right eye so bad that the stuff inside began to protrude out. The eyeball had to be removed. Fortunately it never bothered him (though he hated having his temperature taken by the vet, and I don't blame him one bit). Just before Christmas of '99, he received a similar injury to his remaining eyeball. We managed to catch it in time, so he didn't lose his other eye, but he was permanently blind.

Al stayed with me a few times during 2000, and in October of 2000, Al moved in with me to stay. There were signs of several things wrong with him - insulinoma, heart problems, a possible tummy ulcer - and I tried to help him as best I could. But it was his time. On Nov. 4, 2000, a little ferret named Al left to travel to the Rainbow Bridge. As best as his Mommy can figure, he had to be about 10 or 11 years old. Bye-bye, Al. We miss you, little boy.

This little imp is Peggy. Ramona adopted her about six months after Al, so she was younger - but not by much. She was the more adventurous of the two. In May of '99, she managed to sneak out of her Mommy's house to explore the big wide world. Ramona and I wandered her neighborhood for a long time looking for her. I put up dozens of posters, placed a lost pet ad in the paper, called the Humane Society, placed an ad on a local radio station - the whole nine yards. We were especially worried because that same weekend, Wichita was hit by some terrible storms; a tornado did some major damage to a different part of town. The newspaper ad did the trick; a couple found her trying to get into a bar, only a few blocks from Ramona's house [Insert joke about ferret being legal drinking age and get it out of your system] and were smart enough to check the local paper. Peggy was hungry, but she was fine - she must have found a dry place to wait out the storm, because she wasn't dirty.

Al and Peggy stayed with me a couple of months at the beginning of 2000, and she was a pistol. She was the first ferret to show me what a "Weasel War Dance" looks like. Alas, in April of that year, she figured out how to get out of her Mommy's new home. This time we didn't find her. I can only hope that she found a new and loving home. I miss her, too.

I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if I were to adopt some fuzzies of my own in the future. So - expect more pics to be added at some point.
