| Things to consider before buying from a pet store | ||||||||||||||
| 1. A breeder that loved their dogs would never sell their puppies through a pet store. They wouldn't know who bought them or what sort of homes they would go to, it would be like giving them to the pound. | ||||||||||||||
| 2. Many pet stores falsifye registrations and veterinary records, they purchase puppies through brokers who get them from puppy mills. The current percentage of puppies bought through a pet store that do not suffer from severe genetic disease or disorder within the first four years is only about 15% | ||||||||||||||
| 3. The size and cleanliness of the store is no indication of the quality of the puppies they sell, price is no promise of quality, neither is AKC registration. Many heartbroken owners paid prices upwards of $800 for a pup only to have it die within the first year of either genetic or lack of proper vaccination related diseases like Parvo. I have recieved stories from literally HUNDREDS of people that this has happened to. | ||||||||||||||
| 4. Good breeders will offer a lifetime guarantee on their puppies, reguardless of the circumstances they will always take their dogs back. Expect this and proof of parentage, proof of vaccinations, and a spay/neuter contract. | ||||||||||||||
| What to expect from a Good Breeder | ||||||||||||||
| 1. A lifetime guarantee, with health screening (Which should indicate your puppy is free of all the genetic disorders related to its breed) and vaccination records as well as proof of parentage. (All provided IN WRITTING) | ||||||||||||||
| 2. A spay/neuter contract that requires all non-showing puppies be fixed. There are too many purebreds in shelters people have bred as "pets" to justifye breeding more for the same purpose. A good breeder knows this and will not want to contribute to the problems of their breed by allowing anyone to breed their dogs without their guidance and assistance. People breed to improve the breed they love, not to make "pets" or they are not a good breeder, they are irresponsible and uneducated. | ||||||||||||||
| 3. Ongoing guidance and assistance whenever you need it. Good breeders are available to the people who buy their dogs for as long as those dogs live. They will not treat you with disdain or like you are "stupid or unreasonable" if you come to them with problems. They will help you find solutions. | ||||||||||||||
