After finally arriving at the booby colony, one is amazed at the sight of hundreds of birds - flying around soaring effortlessly in the breeze, fishing in the waters down below, or just sitting on a branch.

This is the only place along the cliffside that has vegetation high enough to nest in; the rest is only about a metre or so high and the nests would be subject to predation by the feral goats and pigs. Some of the trees even grow out over the cliff edge:

The birds are quite fearless; having had almost no exposure to humans they do not know the danger we represent. We were very careful not to touch any bird or frighten it; in reality, most of them were quite curious.

This site is uniquely suited for these birds...with their huge wingspan they are able to basically just hop off the tree over the cliff and catch the rising draft from the cliff face, without having to use a runway like in the old Disney film...landing is just as simple, too - a backward snap of the wings over a branch and Bingo! You're home!
