In Celebration of Keeshonden

Keesha's Story

Keesha was 2 and 3/4 years old when she came into my life in 1992. She was tied to a front porch, not allowed into the house as the family was afraid that she would bite their 6 month old baby. I sat down on the front porch with my back to her and she walked up, put her paws on my shoulders and asked me to take her home. She was my constant companion from that point on.

Keesha had been found at the North York Humane Society at 1 year old. She'd had 3 owners over the next 1 1/2 years and a history of running away. She was small for a female and very dark with a piggy curl that is kinked at the end of her tail.

Keesha went everywhere I went and was soon off leash on our property and at private parks as she would never leave my side. She was a great vacuum cleaner with an insatiable sweet tooth. I bought the cat fur covered catnip mice for Christmas one year and the very next morning, Keesha had torn them to shreds.

She was incredibly protective of and gentle with children, especially the wee ones. I took her to the country cottage with some friends and their small children one summer day. The children disappeared into the woods and seconds later, off went Keesha to find them. Not only did she find them, but she herded them back to us.

In 1994, just before the birth of my son, we found Keesha a friend, Koko, a male who also needed a loving home. I never worried about her with the baby. The wee ones could do almost anything to Keesha and the only reaction that they would get was a mouth over their hand to say enough is enough. The only bad habit that stayed, was if you walked too close to her paws when she was sleeping and startled her, she would snap at you.

She had a zest for life, chasing squirrels, swimming in the lake with the baby geese and snow - rolling in it, batting it, burrowing in it, anything and everything that you could do with snow. She could smell water a mile away and when ever we were driving in the country, you could tell you were getting close to a lake or river by her excitement.

My mother-in-law was not too pleased with Keesha's idea of air-conditioning on a hot summer's day. But she could not stay angry at this adorable little girl. Everyone who met her, fell in love with her. She taught me about life, loyalty, companionship and sheer fun, just because.

It was with great sadness that I found a large baseball lump in Keesha just before the start of my 1998 holidays. I had her hospitalized immediately, x-rayed, ultra-sounded and biopsied two times, to only discover that she had a very malignant hemangisarcoma. She eventually had to be sent to the Rainbow Bridge as she was bleeding internally from the biopsy. Right up to the very end, she was incredibly sweet and loving - one of the best friends you could ever ask for - and the reason why I am in love with Keeshonden today.
