CHESAPEAKE BAY RETRIEVER

BRINDLE

Light brindle Brindle does not show up well on screen. This dog has heavier stripes than is apparent in the picture.

The brindle pattern is a very variable one. The dark stripes on a light background can be so heavy as to make the dog appear almost solid brown or very few and hardly seen. To add to the confusion, the stripes tend to fade with the age of the animal and the age of the coat. Brindle is not to be confused with shading. The bands of different colour can usually be seen at a very young age but may not show up until 6-10 weeks if this pattern is combined with a tanpoint pattern.

This photo is of a brindled dog with a tanpoint pattern. The arrows point to areas that are clear tan in a brown & tan dog. Brindling darkens these areas, though they are still lighter than the brown portion of the coat. You can see the mixture of light and dark hairs. Brindle & tanpoint
