Palms In Missouri

Steve Fuller moved to Joplin Missouri from Florida in 1987. He planted two Sabal minors by his front door that year. These are on the south side of his house and receive no other special winter protection. One is pictured below as photographed in the summer of 1999.

Steve has 50 individual palms planted in his yard. The two palms pictured below were initially planted in 1994. They were moved to their present location 3 years ago.

The only winter protection Steve uses is 6 inches of mulch piled on and around the palm. The leaves are completely exposed. This raises the soil surface and subsiquently it also raises the freeze line. Plants are covered but not heated when temperatures go below 5 degrees F. Wind protection is very important at temperatures below 10 degrees F. In Joplin occasional sever freezes can last over 8 days.

Joplin is in USDA zone 6

Rapidophyllum hystrix

Trachycarpus takil

Though he doesn't have one, Steve thinks that Nonnorrhops ritchiana would also do well in Joplin.
