Cage Type & Size A good cage size for a single guinea pig is 26.5 x 14 x 13.5 inches. I would add 9 inches to each size for 2 guinea pigs. Cages should not have wire bottoms bacause it can be hazard on guinea pigs feet. If their foot falls through then they might panick and break their leg trying to get out. Also their fecus can get stuck on their foot, and with them running on the wire can cause iritation to those little feet. Make sure that the bottom of the cage is either metal or plastic (Plastic is preferred since it wont rust). Also make sure that it is at least 3 inches deep since guineas love to make a mess of things. Do not use aquariams they don't allow proper ventalization. They can also cause things to get way to hot for your guinea Bedding Do not, I repeat do not use cedar or pine bedding. These have been shown to cause illness in guineas, and even early death. I recommend CareFRESH. This stuff even works better than cedar and pine, 3x as absorbint. Food & Water The food dish should be a heavy ceramic dish, one which they can't tip over. The water container should be a water bottle, gravity flow is best. A hay rack is optional rather than placing their hay on the floor. Houseing Guinea pigs need a place to sleep in, a wooden box with a door would do, or even a ceramic pot on it's side would work. |
