I now live in Boulder, CO and would like to come to the reunion if I knew for sure many of our shipmates on the "last dive" were going to be there. Please EMail me if you are out there and let me know. It will most likely be the last legitimate time for us to renew respectful acquaintances. Who has the board we drew up with names of those on the dive that we left in the shed at Gitmo? I have many great photos of the ship, shipmates and the So Am trip just before the "dive" and need to figure out how to get them onto the site. If we were former shipmates, please drop me a line! Thanx! Bob

Jim,
Thanks for the great site. I sailed four years abourd the Chopper and had some good times and some bad but mostly good. In my time aboard the Chopper I never had a shipmate that I didn't like. It is refreshing to revisit the days of my youth again and see
so many familiar faces and sences. I knew every inch of that boat. Having joined the Navy just ten years after WWII I had the honor of serving along side many submarine heros. I consider myself very fortunate to be in such good company. The Chopper had a
pecial mystique that not many other boats had. She was special and every sailor that sailed abourd her was special. I have a lot of friends that were on other boats and they don't seem to hold those boats in the sane respect that the Chopper sailors do. I
talked with Armand "Minnie"
Minutelli this evening by phone for the first time since leaving the Chopper. He was the lead cook and my boss on the Chopper. For all you guys that knew him, he sounded great. He is not on the net but can be reached at (603) 964-5251. Give him a call. He
would love to hear from you. After all, he was responsible for the good chow you guys wolfed down three times a day. Thanks again Jim, good job.

What serendipity! Not only to find this sight, but to recognize several names. Took the excursion in '69. Thirty years later, I still thank the "Spook" (and a few others) for every moment I've had since. I have the plaque from the wardroom, as well as one
of the mugs with the "chopper". I'm not selling.

Congratulations and recognition for a well built lady.Thank those great Engineers from G.D.who designed a great boat that brought her crew back
safe from whatever fate luck cast in her way.I survived the deep-deep dive we made enroute to Gitmo when the Engine Air Induction piping imploded from metal fatigue and increased our weight by many tons when we were at neutral bouyancy. Thanks again for al
the cool heads and the infinate amount of drills we had under our belt,so when the real thing happened we treated it like another drill and were able to talk about it years later. What I now don't understand is, why didn't the crew ever get recognized for
saving that sweet lady? Sweet dreams dear lady.Looking forward to seeing you all for the reunion in Kings Bay ,GA.(April 2001) Well done for the work on the site! I hope we can get our Skippers: Captains- Larry Fromm,Herb King,Bob Brady to come to the sit

Was friends with several Chopper crewmembers...
(all were D.D.M.F.s following her "incident" off
Cuba.
Was "entrusted" with graphic Chopper browcloth...
the "special" one reserved for dignitary visits.
Has a huge, muscular arm rising out of the sea,
gripping a bloody axe, and a ship broken in half
smoking/sinking in background.
A GREAT browcloth! Best of Subron 12's...maybe the
whole Sub Service!
I will consider selling to best bidder...cloth is in EXCELLENT (new) condition, thick canvas painted
white, terrific graphic artwork.
Will give first priority to ex-Chopper crewmembers
(proof required)...GREAT ITEM for upcoming reunion next year!!
I'm (obviously) in no hurry to sell...owned for
30 years already.

The Chopper Reunion is set. We will have or reunion at Kingsland GA on April 5 thru 7, 2001. Visit the reunion page: sites.netscap...4cfv/homepage or The Vietnam Veteran's Memorial Wall Page which supports all military reunions. Click on the
reunion search bar and type in Navy and Chopper in the spaces provided and execute the search. The information is the same in both places but presented a little differently in both places.
Please send me or Stan Martell ([email protected]) who has been a great help in this project your suggestions or comments. We have just nailed down the places, dates, prices and location but there is still a lot of work to do.
See you at the reunion,

My dad, John Penza, was (briefly)stationed aboard Chopper sometime between 1947 and 1953. He was
mainly a tincan sailor, Gunner's Mate. He
left Chopper after he had it out with someone
who shut the breach door of the torpedo tube
he was working inside of. My naval career
was spent on an FF (formerly a DE), then
as a nuke plankowner aboard SSN-695. It ended
after I busted my knee on board and it could
not be fixed well enough to return to sea with.
Now as a computer geek, I get about as much
sunlight as I did at 200 feet. :-)

"BRAVO ZULU" to Jim! Thanks for getting this website started. Chopper was my first boat and she was the definitely the finest. The crew was the greatest bunch of wackos that ever took her to sea!
I served on Chopper from October 1961 till the after battery hatch sent me to the hospital after ADM Grenfells inspection in September (?) of 1963.
There were so many good (and bad) times that we should try to plan a reunion just so we could swap stories. Remember the northern run, when we headed North out of Portsmouth England, seized up #2, blew the air box covers off #1 and couldnt get #4 start
? What a way to start a patrol!
Jim, keep up the good work and if you need some help, give me a shout.
Fair winds and following seas to you, shipmates!
