Senior Stan Eval MFT and Senior Instructor MFT 308th LR

Academic Instructor 4315th CCTS (71-73)

Got into Titan II in 1964 as a Crew Chief w/308 MIMS.
Then went to crew duty in 67-71. Followed that with Instructor duty at Vandenberg 71-73...back to crew at DM
74-77. Went to HQ SAC as NCOIC, of DOMC (missile codes for Titan II and Minuteman). Back to crew in 81 at DM and retired from DM at same time wing deactivated as Senior Enlisted Advisor.

Was a competitor in Olympic Arena in 69 I believe..308th won best Titan II wing that year.

Retired after 30 years (1984) and worked as a retail manager with
AAFES (that's the BX/PX) at DM, Ft Irwin, McChord AFB, Elmendorf AFB, Lackland AFB, Barksdale AFB, and finally retired from AAFES at Ft Polk in 2003. Now live in Chandler Arizona and though it hit 100 today I still love the East Valley.

Great memories...only those that have lived underground as a cold war warrior can appreciate what Titan II meant for this nation.

I hope this finds all of you in good health and spirts.

Comments: Hello all...

DMAFB '69-'73, MFT 571st and Crew Chief 390 MIMS. Lots of time at (and memories of) 1-1, 1-3, 1-6 and all the others.

Was a tour guide for 4 years @ 1-7 (believe it ot not!)in the early 90s and yes -it still smells the same. Little less fuel and oxy odor today, but still there. 1-7 was always a dry site - makes for a great museum. The non-public levels are in good shape, silo elevator works fine. Good for another 30 years at least. Go if you get the chance! Brings back everything in a rush.

Served as crew chief at 532-6 & 532-8, and was fortunate to serve on two launches from Vandenburg. Have many fond memories of interesting times & places and great folks. Often wonder what happened to some of the guys; Smitty, Walt Mowery, Dennis Blank, Ralph simone, Bill MacDonald, John Gilbert, John Schlicher, Clyde Noyce and a bunch of other crazy guys. Me and Butch are probably the only two master techs to serve coffee their last 6 weeks of service, but I'd do it again in a minute.

Was going to try and make reunion but was out of country. Notice most of notes are from guys latter than 70. All four years were with John Barnes, think he remained in service and became an officer. I returned to Houston and Own Godbold & Associates a Real Estate Appraisal and Brokerage firm located in Richmond,Texas. Have not seen or spoken to any old crew guys except Gary and that was 15 or 20 years ago. Mel Godbold

Comments: 1963-1966 Radio Maintenance Repairman,A1C, 308th Comm Sqdrn, LRAFB, Jacksonville, AR. I remember working on the TPS-39 intrusion radar as well... We had a problem at one of the 373 sites where it kept tripping off in the middle of the night and nothing could be found wrong with anything.. We decided to do a stake-out one night and watch things. The problem was a mountain lion jumping the fence, going right over the blast door and up over the other fence... That scared us big time haha.... Had lots of fun running the roads all over northern Arkansas and visiting all the truck stops with all the other Air Force vehicles all lined up in a line outside of them... I got to name one shortcut mountain pass called Braddys Pass. It was a very difficult task to get from site to site working on the Launch Enable System... Ate many box lunchs and got trapped in the access port several times forgetting the password to enter the complex..... I was at the 373-4 Searcy site when it had the terrible fire that killed all of the contractors... The number one task for Radio Maintenance during that time was to made sure the portable radios were kept charged while all of the investigations went on...

I'm currently a DoD Contractor working directly for the Aging Aircraft Program Office (ASC/AAA) here at Wright-Patterson AFB, but never forgot my USAF roots as a Titan-II Crew Commander or Maintenance Officer and all the "fun" times under the wheat fields of Kansas or the saguaro cacti and rattlesnakes of Arizona. Best Wishes to All!

Comments: MFT @ Davis-Monthan 1963-1966. Always great to find another Site dedicated to the Titan II system.

I worked at 571-6 most of the time. Got to visit 571-7 at the last 390th SMWA reunion. It was a time to remember. Lots of the people we worked with are getting up there in age. Time is of the essence. Got to get more people from DM and the other two bases to get to the next reunion in 2 years.

He traveled TDY to Little Rock, Arkansas and other missile silo sites. I believe he assisted in the investigation of a missile silo explosion accident, involving members of the 308 Strategic Missile Wing. I have a belt buckle commemorating those who lost their lives. His home base was Hill Air Force Base. He passed away August 2002, from a battle with Wegner's Granulomatosis. Please, if anyone knew my father, I would appreciate your contacting me.

Now retired to Florida after Pan American, Western Electric and 32 years at the New York City Transit Authority. Been to D.M's Titan site museum. Great stuff. Worked with a lot of wonderful people at LRAFB. Great memories. What a feeling watching a facilities electrician jump after poking his neck with a sharp pencil. He thought he was being shocked. Laughed my butt off. Many more incidents.

Enjoyed pulling alerts on those old birds cept when the Alarms went off in the middle of the nite, or we worse wouldnt reseet and had to pull top side gaurd. I sure miss that duty though it was good duty for us Sky Cops. Sadly was on the responding Security team to 533-7, the day the Sky turned orange/yellow, what a nightmare that was and a terrible lose of life. I still can remember, how sad it was and all the folks that were effected by it forever. Well I hope a few old friends will reconize the name and send me a hello.
