Comments: I was a MFT at Davis Monthan from 78-81 in the 571st. Will re-post with e-mail address later. I can't believe after surfing the internet for so many years I got bored and entered Titan missles. To my suprise there were so many articles and pictures that brought back so many memories. I don't miss going down into the hole, but I do miss the crew and my softball pals who played for the squadron. At eighteen Arizona was fine for me and my new bride. I will never forget those days. Thanks to all the people who remember the titan.

Comments: Was stationed at Davis-Monthan AFB, arriving to be in the 570th SMS before the sites were built. BMAT duty until July 1968, transferred to Wichita Falls to teach the Titan II course, from there went to Chanute AFB in Rantoul, Ill to start a new course on the SRAM. Retired from AF in Sept 1975, moved back to the midwest from whence I had came, and retired from a factory the first day of 2000. Now I am retired, retired, retired. Glad to have stumbled on this site. Brings back lots of memories.

Comments: Hi everyone,

MFT at DM 1975-1979.

I posted back in October 2003 about my concern of exposure to extremely low level amounts of UDMH and HYDRAZINE (The make up of the one fuel in the Titan II and Oxidizer the other).
as I was diagnoised with an Adrenal Tumor.

My research has pointed toward the mixture of UDMH and Hydrazine as the worst of the two fuels for medical problems. However, Oxidizer is bad also. The guys now working around the same fuels have badges, which trigger at 10 ppb. That’s parts per billion! New standards are 50 times less than when we were in the Airforce!

I have filed a new claim against the VA and will let you know the outcome. I even went to MAYO clinic for diagnosis. The head of Neurology finally gave up and admitted the only ones who would have the answers were the Air Force Toxicologist. Ya right, good luck on finding an Air force Toxicologist! My theory now is… let the VA prove to me that my symptoms are not related to UDMH and Hydrazine. Mayo clinic physicians (the best in the country) could not find any other reason. They tested me for everything $25,000 dollars worth of tests.

I will give you the most important Internet links showing that the Air force OSHA is well aware of the problems. I used these articles as my evidence in my VA claim.

1.http://www.ntis.gov/search/product.asp?ABBR=ADA219170&starDB=GRAHIST

2.http://ax.losangeles.af.mil/axz/tns/419.htm admitting tumor response in humans.

3.http://www.oehha.org/air/chronic_rels/pdf/302012.pdf Hydrazine technical sheet.

4.http://books.nap.edu/books/0309072948/html/155.html page 172-tumor response in rats. Lot more info inside. Can’t download. You can print each page as it is on screen. Can buy for $36.00. I just printed each page.

5.http://www.gasdetection.com/TECH/udmh.html UDMH article health effects

6.http://www.gulflink.osd.mil/kuwaiti_final/kuwaiti_final_tabd.htm Oxidizer article

7.http://www.oehha.ca.gov/air/acute_rels/pdf/7697372A.pdf Oxidizer technical article.

8.http://ax.losangeles.af.mil/axz/ this is the organization that published the item 2 article for the USAF OSHA.

9.http://www.aero.org/envsys/ETIP-detect.html new sensor for the lowered fuel human exposure levels.

10.http://www.aero.org/envsys/pdfs/hzdetect-052200.pdf document about the need to detect these fuels.

11.http://ehp.niehs.nih.gov/roc/tenth/profiles/s077umdh.pdf UDMH technical article

12.http://ax.losangeles.af.mil/axz/tns/402.htm another article from item 5 organization about the legal fall out of worker exposure. Paragraph 9.

13.http://asms.k12.ar.us/armem/ha/ACCIDENT.HTM 125 leak accidents between 1975-1979.

14.http://www.globalsecurity.org/wmd/systems/sm-68b.htm shut down of titan by DOD because of safety (leaks)

After you read all this info you can come to your own conclusion. My conclusion is… we were lab rats.

I have to get another CT scan in June to see if the tumor is growing. Can’t do a biopsy because if it is cancer they drag the cancer through the body as the needle comes out. They do wash out studies on the tumor with IV contrast during the CT scan to see if it is cancer. My test was inconclusive. They checked the rest of my body for cancer and found none. Good sign. However, I have muscle spasms and joint pain that can’t be diagnosed as anything else. It is time to let the VA run its tests.

Let me know if these articles help.

Sincerely,
Terry Nier

Comments: My contribution to the Titan II program was with the 395SMS. I was a PTS troop at Vandenberg AFB from 1964 to 1971. I notice a Dave Winger that I was station with here, but he is the only one I have ran across. Their were over forty of us in the PTS section if my memory is correct. We had some good times, but some very trying times, too. I was in charge of downloading the first aborted Titan II missile ever up to this time. My NCOIC, Msgt Gillard, had just signed out on leave that very day before the launch took place. It took us over two weeks to get the bird downloaded with the help of AFLC writing the Tech data as we went along. The commander, Lt. Col. Canon, did monitor and record the entire downloading operation. I have so much to be thankful for during this offload operation. We managed without any hazard and injury to personnel. Many special thanks to Tsgt Adams with QC&E, if he hadn't been for him the results could have been entirely different. Also to SSgt Hamel, Sgt Bordeax, who was able to re-attach a cap on a fuel connector that had accident been pulled off. Their was so many guys who went beyond the call of duty. Because of their actions, is probably why many of us are still using oxygen today. Also special thanks to all the PTS personnel of the 395SMS for looking after me during this trying task. As I write this article, I am at guest housing at Vandenberg AFB. The wife and I are spending a few days reminiscing of times pass. The base is still here, but has been changed so much since I left in 1971. To all, the PTS building is still about the same along with the MIMS. The trailer parks are gone, the housing area, commissary, Exchange and clothing store have all changed (replaced.) One place that looks basically the same is the Service Station. I worked here part time during my stay pumping gas. A Mr. North was the Stations Managar. Back then you couldn't pump gas yourself. Well, everyone, I have chatted much to long. I would love to hear from anyone who was station here during this time. God bless all... Don Garrett

Comments: I was one of the first MFTs assigned to the 374th SMS at Little Rock AFB in August 1963. I was assigned to crew number R-106. I later became an instructor and then an evaluator. I left LRAFB in 1967 for an assignment with the Mace Missile at Kadena AFB, Okinawa in the 498TMG. In December of 1969 I returned to the States and became a Pad Chief with the 390th SMW at Davis-Monthan AFB. I was assigned to the site near Maderia Canyon, and it was number 5, but I cannot remember the squadron number.

I retrained into computers in 1972 and finished my Air Force career in September 1987 after 25 years.

Comments: Hi everyone,

I was an MFT at DM 1975-1979. UofA Grad 1984. I am 49 years old now.

A serious question for all you other crew and maintenance people. Last week I was diagnoised with a tumor on my adrenal gland, along with that cysts on my liver and spleen. More test comming to determine cancer. Here is the shocker, I researched UDMH on the web and low and behold the same symptoms come up for very low exposure to rats , hamsters, monkeys etc.(.38 ppm/8hr,.75 ppm/4hr) and it gets worse for higher amouts. DSV rounds out in the silo took about 4-5 hours. As you all remember we stuck our heads into the launch air conditioner ducts (smart move, the inside was probably contaminated beyond belief and then we ate but more important we inhaled). The equipment area probably was just as contaminated because of the leaks in the system. I am a little upset that we were probably lab rats. Any information pro or con concerning these observations would be welcome. Anyone else that has had CT scans of the abdomen with or without these problems, please email me. Anyone who has info on the propellant sensing equipment and acurracy of the equipment we checked on DSV, email me.

Thanks fellow crew members/maintenance for your help,

Terry Nier

Comments: I was first assigned to the 381st Missile Wing on 6/12/62,
and to the 381st MIMS when it was later organized. I was a Missile Handling Equipment Operator (MHEO) and will never
forget the long hours spent in the cabs of the Coles Cranes.
I may not have fully appreciated my position at the time but
not a day goes by that I don't think of the people who I worked with. Only years later did I realize the officers, NCOs, enlisted men and the Martin employees were the very best people I would ever work with. My time was up in April '65, and I never looked back as I left the base on that last day. But as time went by I realized this had been an opportunity that comes around but once in a lifetime.

Comments: I was in the 381st SMW at McConnell from '74 to '76 in the 533rd SMS then moved to Wing as a DMCCC evaluator. Even though I left crew duty early (after less than 3 years), I still have a 200-missions under Kansas patch to remind me of some intense times. I am proud to have been part of that team. And that was a hell of a team!

See you on the web.

Hi to all the folks who worked in 381st MIMS at McConnell.

I was the first female assigned to the propulsion shop in 1975, also was Crew Chief of complex 532-4, and after developing an allergy to the missile fuel, went to Plans and Scheduling.

Anyone who remembers me, I'd love to hear from you.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane, you have a very nice
site. I was assigned to the 390th Communications Sqd. in
support of HF-SSB/UHF rado transmitter gear at all of the
sites, serving from November 1975 through December 1978.
Does anyone know if there are any maps online showing where all of the sites used to reside?

My interest in maps are in regards to the Tucson area, I was stationed at DMAFB.

Thanks again, Rodger

Comments: BMAT, McConnell 1963-1966. I was on the other end of this. When I arrived at McConnell we were just beginning to activate the weapon systems. After spending many hours, days and weeks dropping the birds into the holes, working with propellant transfers and, believe it or not, huge site modifications by civilian contractors at all the 532 and 533 sites, we were finally assigned to launch crews.

I would like to hear from any of the fellows I served with.
Thanks for the opportunity!
