Although research for Lethal Exposure began soon after the Gulf War, interest in the programme has constantly increased as more veterans speak out about their illnesses. The documentary has continued to spark debate in many different quarters.
Lethal Exposure was screened at the Edinburgh Filmhouse along with an impressionistic documentary, Servi Mus Fide, and Bouncers, a short film made by students of the Fierce Film School. The screening was followed by a panel discussion involving veterans Alan Mitchell and Michael Rochford and Stan Smith (SNP Defence Panel); Judy Hayman (Prospective Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate), Colin Campbell (SNP Defence Spokesman) and Dr MacLeod (neurologist and Labour representative). The veterans were invited to talk about the battles they had fought during and after the war. The lively debate ran over time, and continued in the Traverse Theatre.
Fierce Films held a multimedia presentation at The Global Cafe, London.
The documentary was broadcast worldwide over the
internet from the cafe. A live
discussion was also webcast, along with short supporting film Servi Mus Fide.
The audience consisted of members of the armed forces, filmmakers, Gulf veterans and the general public.
Speakers included Tom House, head of the Royal British Legion pensions division, and Roslin McPaul, producer of
the documentaries.
The films and discussion have been archived by the Global whizzkids.
The soundtracks can be accessed via The Global Cafe web site.
Stan Smith of the SNP Defence Panel is planning to set up a helpline
for veterans suffering from Gulf War illnesses. Mr Smith
can be reached on 01592 653 693.
